There will always be greedy douche bags in every MMO and there will always be some way they find to exploit people in the name of Greed over Need. I can probably say with a good amount of certainty that most players have come to expect this from a MMO to a certain extent, it doesn't matter what the method is it's just how things tend to happen in MMO's.

Does it bug or infuriate people? Yes.

    Is it completely avoidable? No.

Can you do anything about it? Not really besides never grouping with said person again, because SE has stated numerous times players can't "steal" what randomly falls to their loot list, and it's up to the individual to hand over said item if he/she chooses.

Best thing you can do in such a situation is not lose your temper, brush yourself off, and just say "Sorry guys, I'm not gonna go on if he's going to be a douchebag like this" and leave. It's doubtful that a GM would try to do anything unless he's being obscene, rude, harassing, or threatening, but if you feel obliged to call one remember to keep yourself calm and courteous because it's not hard for a GM to focus your attention on you when your being the hothead.

In either case, I welcome the ability to quickly group up and get things done, even if I never use it myself it's a nice feature to have on hand.

Exactly. People are people, whether they use the content finder or not. You find as many morons by shouting in ul'dah as you do by using the content finder in games that have one.

When you PUG, you take in account the possibility that you'll meet some people that won't fit your expectations. Content finders just make pugging easier, so that you don't have to be bored like crap while doing it.

It's not content finder that ruins the community, it's the community that ruins the community.

Personally, the lack of content finder is what caused me to leave Guild Wars 2.

I played WOW for a combined 2 years after the dungeon finder. It's nowhere near as bad as you think it is, because everyone realizes that if they're a douche or that there's a douche in the party, everyone suffers.

Being nice and forgiving of people's mistakes, and being forward if I'm inexperienced, have gotten me so many good and friendly dungeon runs that I can count on one hand the number of times I've been kicked or rage quit. Compassion and friendliness go a long way, regardless of how bitter and childish the community is at a whole.

It's going to be an interesting exercise for the FFXI/FFXIV community, because one of the things that was prevalent throughout FFXI's lifetime is rampant elitism, JP/NA only, random /pcmd leave, and pulling internet plugs to have a "nice" or "drama free" party disband.

I'm not sure what you mean. There's no competition for resource nodes in XIV, at least there wasn't in 1.0. A node that was empty for you may not be for another player. At least that's how I understood it, seeing other players gather at nodes that were listed as empty for me.

They mentioned there will be a change like this for ARR, just not present in ARR Alpha...so we don't exactly know how that will be.

Ah, I never heard that. All I knew was that gathering itself was changing, the mini-game removed mostly.
