    No they don't. They don't even need PvP at all for it to "make it out the door" and be successful. Let's not get carried away with the hyperbole.

    PvP is clearly important/critical for your enjoyment of a game. It is most certainly not very important - if at all - for everyone.

    Yoshi-P has already explained that such an all-out PvP system would be out of place in XIV because the setting, story and intended gameplay is based around cooperation and teamwork against a common foe, not "every player against each other".

    For national pride/competition, the systems they're implementing will suit it just fine.

    My thoughts are this, why are we introducing a PvP system when in the storyline we are so focused on the imperials, beastmen, primals. Where in the story does fighting each other play in?

    Not that I don't like the idea of a PvP system to please the masses. I will take part in it to see what it has to offer but I think we will be busy enough with the storyline and our own priorities that PvP will take a backseat. Here is some speculation: Will we eventually get access to join an opposing faction such as the Imperials? Beastmen?

    Food for thought there.

    It's not a part of the story. It's a side-activity. A competitive type of PvP, for points or whatever system they choose to go with. Similarly, Ballista and Brenner were PvP type activities in FFXI that had no impact at all on the main game, and had no bearing on the storyline. It's just content for people to do who enjoy that kind of thing.

    Nah. It's not going to become a PvP MMO on that scale. That much has been said already.

    Here's a bit about the PvP from an interview with Yoshi-P:

    Q: What about PvP?
    A: There will not be open PvP/ PK, and both players must mutually agree to a PvP match. Final Fantasy XIV will be the first game in the franchise to have a “meaningful” PvP system, hence I urge players to try it out.

    Q: Is it fair to say the PvP in Final Fantasy XIV is somewhat similar to World of Warcraft’s?
    A: We will have a PvP arena, which is similar to the one found in World of Warcraft. Our PvP team members played many matches in World of Warcraft. Personally, I am a player of Dark Age of Camelot, a PvP-centric MMO.

    I personally kind of "cringe" when ever I see a developer make a claim of how their MMO will "be the first" to do something, as it's seldom true, and too often way off-mark. What exactly do they mean by "meaningful", I don't know... I hope it's not in a sense where PvP rewards will somehow effect the main storyline and other non-PvP gameplay.

    I'm already concerned about another quote:
    We will have a strong in-game guide, making sure players know where to go and what activities are there to do once they enter a new map.”"

    I really... really.. really hope that doesn't translate into "copious amounts of hand-holding, where the player never has to figure anything out for them self and exploration is never required to discover new places/things, because everything is pointed/spelled out for them."

    Fingers crossed that's not the case.

    What the hell is going on in this thread. I clicked it hoping to read a discussion about PVP, and instead the first 3 pages are people arguing about what has already been confirmed or disconfirmed, or proposing ridiculous PVP ideas that would NEVER WORK IN XIV (open world PVP, are you serious?).

    Normally I don't take the time to post my disappointment with bad threads, but honestly, this one deserves it. Some of you should be ashamed.

    So... you came into the thread looking for discussion about PvP. You find people discussing/debating various issues related to PvP...

    What's the problem, exactly? Is the conversation not going exactly the way you wanted/expected it to?

    There's a solution for that, if so. Respond with your own comments on the topic and, perhaps, introduce an element to the conversation more in line with what your thoughts on it are. Don't come in here talking down to people about "how we should be ashamed", while contributing nothing to the thread yourself.

    Because of the introduction of the Garlean invasion, each city-state had to reintroduce their Grand Companies. These are organizations, iirc, that originally despised each other. It was your job in the storyline to convince each GC to agree to both a truce and an alliance. That was the majority of the GC missions. Now in the End of an Era trailer, we see that despite the alliance, the plan had failed. In addition, there is a possibility that the leaders that had originally agreed on the alliance may have died in the event.

    The end result to the failure of the alliance and the death of the leaders? Without the common goal of stopping Dalamud and Nael Van Darnus, the GCs have no reason to stay together anymore. They can go back to their original disputes. I'm willing to bet that the GCs will once again begin to bicker and fight causing a small war between them. At this point, you have to fight for your own GC.

    While I would agree with the statement since nothing is truly ever new in the grand scheme the translation was very specific to point out in the FF franchise. The biggest effect from Player VS Player in 11 was the signet/conquest points but with the raise of level cap out of beta and the expansion even that was really left by the wayside unless you were using the npc merchants for items.

    Now I am assuming it is something bigger then just that and somewhat on equal footing as holding a primal. Which lets be honest in the scope of a game where one character can do everything that is huge. By your free company having it your ensuring no one else on the whole server can have it for the limited time. So if they are willing to do that PVP could also have a bonus to free company that is a one a server limited of time thing. As soon as they take the step on actual rarity the possibility and willingness to add it to an already competitive event is there. I assume though it will be something major but not game breaking like a cup or access to free airship rides but you never know.
