@Reika: I would like to see that kind of dungeon Reika - I like the Tifa tree but does anyone remember that tree in FFIX that was in the desert / surrounded by a desert storm? Big tree, stuff inside and out = cool lol

Maybe mix dungeon and town together - throughout the base and core is dungeon but after you reach a certain height there is a town near the top. Supplies through use of airships.

@Felis: certainty not all trees - but the trees on the cliffs even the types that go straight down would have roots coming out of the cliff walls.
FFIX in general had lots and lots of overgrown plants its was quite nice. The lifa tree the source of the mist, Cleyra another big tree surrounded by a sandstorm hurricane(you had to avoid sand pits and fiddle with the sand levels on the way up), The evil forest too with its plant monsters and the rush to escape it.

This is a small thing, there's no arguing there. But with details in place it creates that little extra quality we FF players are so fond of like Alaltus mentions here, memories are created by these details. Lifa tree is a big part of FF lore, and to give trees more life can only do good i think. There may be alot of other types of details that can be added as well, everything counts in my book. The roots was just something i immediatly noticed by some strange reason.

You do realize that good design is majorly made up from such small things, aka "attention to detail"? The reason our current maps were so bland and repetitive despite the game having great graphics, was precisely because of such little things missing.

While tree roots don't make or break a game, it would be nice to have to add to the overall atmosphere of the game. Same goes for fire/butterflies or birds flying around, or NPCs strolling through the streets. Or grass (whoops, I said it :P) growing on the fields.

People have been shouting lately, that graphics are not important, they want to concentrate on The Game. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure the majority of those people were also the ones annoyed by copy-pasted, bland maps.

He means roots trailing over the surface of the ground like tree roots do.

I like the idea of seeing more roots, but I suppose its possible that the Gridanians buried the roots to protect them and get them out of the way?

Yeah those shadows are pretty bad, they remind me of Skyrim shadows >.<

Skyrims is due to bad settings lol - you can modify a couple lines to get really good shadows with 0 fps loss. Can go further with some mods but then you will lose frames..
