    I don't think we'll be able to call them at all, since they 'drain aether' at such a large scale.
    Yeah i'll remain inclined to the possibility of our deity giving us gifts for battle instead of us summoning them, gifts like Armor set or an ability ....or an Armor set that becomes powerful when using a 2hour ability granted by your deity make their essence appear by your side when doing so to do the special ability and your eyes glow! zomg i'm brainstorming too much

    They drain the Aether at such a large scale when all 12 of them are called at once. I would imagine the effect they have on the aether when only one is called would be a fraction of that.

    You're probably right, and it wouldn't surprise me if they did do something with it, but it would just seem a bit silly (to me) if The Twelve were summoned as a last resort, the lesser of the evils, in one version of the game, but in ARR we're encouraged to call them for help more often

    Using the element argument, let's explore that a little further:

    We know the primals each represent an element

    Fire = Ifrit
    Wind = Garuda
    Ice = Shiva

    etc
    but what of darkness and light, or unbral and astral.

    Well, this is what I came up with:
    Bahamut to me seems like he's a Darkness primal. He causes death, destruction, sickness, etc. Things attributed to darkness or evil.

    Arcanists can summon Carbuncle. That leads me to believe he/she's a primal. Could be ours.

    Now, looking even further, we know Odin and Fenrir exist. Should we consider them primals? If so, which element to they represent? I think Fenrir obviously is darkness, and same with Odin. Odin represents death/underworld, similarly to Bahamut.

    But now, we have an issue...There are 3 umbral primals (Bahamut, Odin, Fenrir) but only one Astral primal (Carbuncle). Knowing SE, one of the themes here will be balance, so if there are 3 umbral primals, what are the other 2 astral primals?

    As was mentioned before, Alexander would most likely be an Astral primal, but we're still short one.

    Umbral Primals:
    Bahamut
    Odin
    Fenrir

    Astral Primals:
    Carbuncle
    Alexander?
    ???

    Bahamut isn't an elemental Primal, that's the reason who was chosen as the destroyer for the 7th Umbral era.

    In XIV, Astral is made of Wind, Water, and Earth elements, whereas Umbral is Ice, Fire, and Thunder (Hence the split between white mage and black mage using those elements).

    Doesn't mean they won't add Primals of those elements though. But like every (I think) FF, Bahamut isn't assigned with an elemental affinity. I don't think Odin will either.

    And since summoners are only summoning Primals' essences, and Carbuncle isn't actually available for SMN use, I think it's safe to say that Carby isn't a Primal at all.

    They call Carbuncle a familiar in the description on www.finalfantasyxiv.com

    IDK if anyone pointed this out, but the main story line mentions that we are from Garlean Empire and that is where the Echo comes from. As for our Primal I cannot say for sure but looking at the beastmen in a similar fashion to our races, I'm thinking we'll maybe have five primals one for each race. Kinda disappointed that we didn't get Titan to fight as it's clearly Kobold's primal.
    From what I've seen, known Primals are Garuda(Ixali), Titan(Kobold), Ifrit(Amalj'aa), Leviathan(Sahagin?), Bahamut and Odin. Goblins and Sprites Primals are never real mentions but the Sprites at least have one, Quaziqoatl maybe? The FF universe has a load of avatars that can be use so I don't see why each race cannot get one. Just my speculations on the matter. Honestly though, I think "our" primal might not be "our" primal but the ability to use the primal of a beast tribe; noting that we'll be defeating a primal and being able to summon it once from the released notes. But still jusy my speculations, thoughts, and opinions.

    Garuda = Ixali
    Ifrit = Amal'jaa
    Titan = Kobolds (this was due to be in 1.0, but its release was around the time of a major earthquake in Japan so they decided to postpone it)
    Leviathan = Sahagins
    Shiva = Giants
    Ramuh = ??? (I think someone's made some speculations into the other beastman, but I can't recall off the top of my head. I think Sylph was a potential, but I thought they were friendly, like Ququroon and Goblins)

    But Bahamut and Odin have no (known) affiliation with anyone, men or beastmen.

    Just because they're not hostile towards us doesn't mean they don't have a Primal. They actually explicitly mentioned in one of the main story quests that they don't want to summon their Primal because of the evil influence they have over those who summon them.
