I think the FF XI song is slightly better but both are great.

FFVI - Terra's Theme.
I can't explain what it is about this song, I can just close my eyes and it's one of the few songs where I just feel what Terra must have felt during the game. That sense of longing, the hope for a brighter tomorrow, the soul searching. It just leaves me with chills.
Whether it's orchestrated or just with the SNES's sound chip ^_^.
If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?
Have you heard the Terra vocal theme?FFVI - Terra's Theme.

I have. I actually got to hear that in concert and it made me cry the entire song, it's just..so beautiful a piece. It was a horrible tease though, their timing made me think they were going to release a final fantasy VI game, or maybe a movie. But unfortunately, I always get disappointment on that front.
I would love a followup to that game.

After hearing answers playing our last days and seeing and hearing it during our final cut scene definitely made it one of my top top top FF tracks of all time.
I know its not FF but:

I can relate to you, when I was young I bought the CD soundtrack from a JP bookstore and Terra was one of my favorite track on the cd. Your description is well said about Terra's life.
Terra theme is good, i prefer the other version in gameFFVI - Terra's Theme.

My favorite before Answers was Suteki Da Ne, it fits that scene in FFX perfectly, Eyes on Me is also very good.
Now either Answers or Suteki Da Ne too close to call, I would say equal.
All songs mention on comments are great
My favorite in order.

Just a very short list since there's too many good old tunes I like within the series...
That's the thing about Final Fantasy music, it fits perfectly within the game. After watching the scenes attached to the music piece, you can't help but remember it.
Answers now has that attachment emotionally for many people. I already liked answers, this made it a top FF piece.
