Because Muskets are, you know, guns?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musket
The Three Musketeers were famous as swashbucklers, but a musketeer is actually an infantry class trained at using muskets. The word you guys are looking for instead is Fencer (or, if you want, Swashbuckler) and would very likely end up having Red Mage as its job.

I'm actually a little obsessed about the idea of a Time Mage..

Wikipedia knows all "A musketeer (French: mousquetaire) was an early modern type of infantry soldier equipped with a musket."
"The musketeer was a precursor to the rifleman. Muskets were replaced by rifles in most western armies during the mid 1850s. The traditional designation of "musketeer" for an infantry private survived in the Imperial German Army until World War I."

And a Ranger it all depends on what they concept they want ranger to stem from, I would personally prefer it if they did the same as FFXI in which Ranger was a hunter, which would make bows the best choice.

And there lies the confusion with people who dont look up things. Musket is a type of gun (fact)
Musketeer for FF lore is a Job type concentrating on the use of a musket as their weapon.
Movies... sure you have the 3 musketeers but that was the name of their group. The swords they used were rapiers. In FF lore that would be classified under the Fencer class(aka Red Mage)
Don't let a movie/books of the group "The Three Musketeers"(who were all fencers) confuse you all with a guild in FFXIV call the Musketeers Guild, that specializes in using muskets. Its two very different things.
