FFXIV-- the fear of a WoW Clone is real...

on the recent live letter, it was mentioned that the devs have been playing Starwars old republic and guild wars 2.

Do you guys fear that what made FFXI and FXIV unique will cease to exist and that we will sadlyl endup being a WoW clone?

Considering 11 was largely based on EQ I doubt it will make 14 less special, even if they borrow from other MMOs.

XI was inspired by EQ but if you put the games side by side you can immediately tell marked differences, the problem is, if you put x MMO side by side with WoW, you can tell almost no differences but a few things that loses it's novelty very quickly then all you have is the typical systems. Some people say this is how it's supposed to be because "it's the MMO standard."

Not to mention, once people realize they're playing the same game even though it's deemed a new MMO, they leave it.

SE will make money making it a standard MMO, but they will also lose their playerbase once they settle for doing just that rather than trying to stand out like XI did. It got it start by taking EQs base systems, but SE made it their own, rather than what they're doing with XIV which so far from what we seen official or leak wise, they're taking the systems...and that's just it. The systems are being imported and nothing really new.

As long as they look at star wars the old republic, which sold huge but over time has plummeted subscribers and is now going free to play in the near future. They spent 200 million dollars mostly on the voice acting, and copied WoW in nearly every way. It doesn't work.

dont think FFXIV its going to be a wow clone other then the UI and stuff like that. were gonna have more depth, and look like were getting active events like GW2. who knows what else.

SWTOR was a joke it was wow limited like crazy, the CS's alone were not going to save that game since its going F2P in less then a year. as a SW fan i was disapointed.

almost everything after wow was a clone and failed, if people want wow they play wow, if they leave wow it because they want something else.

I did not care for games like SWTOR, Rift and GW2 becaise they resuse and abuse the old and tired WoW formula. FF14, despite all its horrible problems, was an original and different game targeted to the FF fans
