Difficulty is subjective - FFII, FFIII, FFV, FFIX, FFTactics could all be seen as "hard" ones. Every RPG in existence is either easy or hard depending on the player.Bad idea. You want them to make a good game or slam their faces against a wall in a mix of frustration/boredom?
Final Fantasy XI is a dated game, people. I challenge anyone who disagrees to make a new character and try taking it up to 30 with all the context that gaming has gone through since its release.
Also, "watered down Final Fantasy game?"
When has there ever been a "hard" Final Fantasy?
By watered down I'm pretty sure it's because XIV is damn well nothing like a FF game.

Every RPG that doesn't have enemy level-scaling or imposed level caps is easy, as all you have to do is grind up as high as you can and use the win button.

By your own admission then FFXI in its day was hard. CoP capped fights, (which mind you were some of the most fun quests I've ever done in any game.) BCNMs capped or not, Maat fight, etc, etc.
Then, by no great leap in logic, the claims of the OP that FFXIV doesn't share that sort of 'challenge' are not unfounded.

Did he just say "true" fan?
I don't really think telling you my FFXI history would satisfy you, but suffice to say "necromancy" is the act of bringing something to life that had previously existed.
Bro, I couldn't play through another 12 hours if someone paid me. The game is a slow timesink. There is no other challenge than to your patience, which as a busy adult, as opposed to a masochistic highschool senior/bachelor student when I first started FFXI, I have little of.

I can understand you have no time to play 14 or 11 but its a MMo it never ends so getting everything in 6 months or 1 year really whats the difference. The game is still there like 11 8 years later still there. But thats not the point the point me and 90% of everyone else is makeing is the accual system not the story , not the gameplay backround its the system.Did he just say "true" fan?

basically we're at a point in time where the previous generation of gamers doesnt have time because they grew up and got jobs and had kids, and the next are rather young and impatient.
The market for something like XI just isnt as big anymore.

Did you get Sea access befor nerf?
Did you do DM?
Did you play as a blue mage and collect every single spell ?
Now i dont know what your version of hard is but them things there were damn hard to do. And i quit 11 in december soon as you get to level 30 all you do is abyssea to 90. What im saying is play 11 for 3 weeks and see how easy the interface is , how much smoother the simple things like Linkshells , serch, party formation is. You know the freaking basics of 11s system. Not the freaking storyline and crappy graphix.
How hard is it fopr people to understand that simple point. WE DONT WANT 11!! WHAT WE WANT IS THE SYSTEM OF 11. It was never broken and could have ben used here. Thats the wole point. I channenge anyone to play 11 for 12 hours , then play 14 for 12 hours and tell me witch basic system is better.

Incidentally I necromanced my FFXI account last night to try to start up a new character and catch up with some friends. Getting from lvl.1 - 15 was just as painful as I remember it.
Final Fantasy XI isn't hard and it never was hard. It was a frustrating timesink.
Actually I take it back. Lost Odyssey was actually pretty doable even with level caps. Nevermind that second criteria.

Well if you had issues getting from 1~15 and it was hard im sorry that getting 15 levels was hard. Also in that statement im going to guess you never did DM , nor had sea access , nor did dynamiss? Because them were some hard things to do. I mean not as hard as gaining 15 levels but man thay were close......
Also
also if you arnt understanding the chaenge ill respell it out and ill maek big spaces so people can understand because i know im not speaking proper english so here again is the challenge.
GO PLAY 11 FOR 12 HOURS THEN PLAY 14 AND THEN TELL ME WITCH BASIC SYSTEM IS BETTER!
And ill add this by basic system this is what i mean
DO A SERCH , MAKE A LINKSHELL , USE THE AH , GO CHECK BAZAARS , MOVE AROUND THE WORLD, USE THE MENUES , DO A SKILLCHAIN , TARGET A MOB , TARGET A PC IN A PARTY WILE FIGHING A MOB.
Ok hope this FINALY clears the air on what WE the true players of FFXI and the seriers in general are screaming about. We want 14 to be EPIC! IF we dident we wouldent be so vocial about it. If you cant understand this really go jump off a bridge because you have no clue what were asking SE then. Nor do you have any idea about 11s BASIC systems

If it takes you 29 posts before you can finally say what it is you want, I don't think you're in the right to tell anyone else to go jump off a bridge.
