I don't believe SE wants to put anything in that would run the risk of losing their customers. I am sure if SE could choose without any consequence, they would let you, but I 100% understand where they come from on this, and would decide that myself.

This is what i have said from the beginning. In the end they will have to decide which one (if either) will loose them more subscribers. I am not convinced that there is enough people who would actually LEAVE the game if it was not implemented. They are going to have to do a far-reaching comprehensive poll to decide this. If there is anything to the advantage of those to actually want it, it is that most people (myself included) who don't support it in real life couldnt care less if it is in a game so they naturally vote to put it in.

To respond to the idea that implementing marriage here would further deteriorate it:

you don't need a video game to ruin the concept of marriage when you have fools like Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears who already do a fine job of that. Just sayin >_>

Plus changing the name means its not marriage :P

Doubt anyone in game is going to complain about the rate of handfast reverts. Lol

Though creating semi binding / probhibitive measures to dissuade making handfast a wonton choice would be nice lol ( Gil prices is one way)

I really hope they do allow same sex marriages. In ffxi and other mmo I have played nearly all of the marriages I went to were same sex and had to be done outside of the official one because the game did not allow it lol.

2 females can compete to be the "most romantic couple" in the 2012 valentione's day celebration. Condoning the romantic aspect of a gay couple has not been an issue at all from what I can tell. Its just the name. Marriage. If it exists, the question of whether it is MF or MM or FF or all 3 is the OP issue. Based on the votes so far, the odds are 4:1 supporting SSM.

If you want to rename it universally, and anyone regardless of race or gender can participate, that is an option I will not argue. What I do argue is whether "soul couple" or "spirit link" or whatever you call it in the end will be considered the equivalent of marriage, and if it is, what is the point of renaming it?

The word 'marriage' has a stigma attached to it thanks to a lot of people in the world that deem it should be between a man and a woman only.

So taking the idea, the aspect of marriage and that partnership and naming it something else, even though in essence it's the same thing but includes same sex marriage is a way of shedding some of that stigma.
People could argue "Well it's marriage!" And it could be argued that no marriage exists in Eorzea, but handfasting or bonding instead, so they can keep their precious 'straight onry marriage' and cram it somewhere (politely, of course). To answer another part of your question; Yes, the new name would be the equivalent of marriage^^;


Now pair the rename with say... reworking what the bonding actually is - say for instance you leave it up to the player to define what their pact means to them - Whether it's friends swearing allegiance to eachother, or lovers taking vows, each ceremony could be the same regardless of what oath was being sworn, that could sidestep a lot more fallout too because then SE doesn't have to say "We're allowing SSM", they could say "We're allowing players to Bond, or show their allegiance to eachother." Again shedding the whole 'you're screwing with the sanctity of marriage' crap.


I'd love to see more ideas being pushed around guys! It'd be awesome if SE did read this and take note ;~;

Just liked this entire page! I'm affraid too much positive energy on these forums is going to bring them down, oh noez!

On-topic, it's funny to see people still "NOT WANTING" it to be introduced, when it is certain we will have marriage, whatever that ends up being. There will also not be benefits, if FFXI's marriage is anything to go by. It'll be a dorky event where people can practice a fictional wedding. And that's okay, because nobody is getting hurt and nobody is going to feel offended when they see me marrying my Roegadyn husband.

Also plan on spending my honeymoon in the "Limsa Honeymoon Paradise". Will post pics!
