Even as a married woman the word 'marriage' sounds so archaic and it's been marred by years of fighting.

Soul partners / bond partner etc is something I could totally get behind irl too!

Most people these days have children without even being married. People who are married go on with their lives without having children. People who are married are usually divorced several times throughout their lives.

There is no sanctity to marriage. There hasn't been any for ages. It's a legal trait, and nothing more. The only special thing about it is at most the ceremony or ability to call someone you love your husband or wife. It has nothing to do with biology.

Yes, however there is potential to have offspring - even if that potential isn't actualized. And most people who get married do have offspring - which benefits society at large.

Not once in my entire life have I ever heard marriage about offspring, including when I used to be a religious nut but smartened up over the years and threw those teachings away.

Even so, if it is a rule of religion (which is generally the case in these arguments since no scientific or social rule will support any anti-homosexuality argument), real world religion has absolutely no place in games like this.
