    Game Crash, Direct X error/crash

    I've been trying for weeks to get the game to a stable playing point. I use Game Booster to shut off unneeded processes, shut down any other programs that aren't needed or used, etc. Crash happens in both fulls screen and windowed mode, without alt-tab being used. I've also tried just not using Game Booster and shutting off all programs that might be conflicting.

    I've reinstalled the drivers twice, second time manually uninstalling and reinstalling. Lowered video settings. Crash says "Unable to detect Direct X device" Then when I shut off gaming mode in Game Booster after this crash, it gives me a notice saying "Direct X driver has stopped responding and has recovered", etc.

    Computer configuration:

    Any ideas to try would be much appreciated. I love the game, but crashing several times when you're trying to play is very frustrating, especially when you're in the middle of a guild leve.

    Thanks

    I'm actually quite surprised that this issue hasn't been adressed yet, as it's very widespread, and potentially gamebreaking for many. I'd love to see someone from SE actually posting on it.

    This is a cause of great frustration for me too,
    At first the game would crash 2/3 times a night with either "dirrectX not found" or "Windows has stopped working" error,
    I was advised to role back the graphic card software GTS 250, i did that and the "windows has stopped working" error hasnt come back, however I still get the dirrectX not found error, all graphic setting are at standard and i have no fancy settings on the graphics card, we got this graphic's card because it meet the criteria set by SE for this game!
    it's not an issue SE have ever mentioned and i'm not sure they even aware its such a problem!!

    I'm sure this has already been done, but to double check, make sure that you are not running any other programs that use DirectX; this problem (Frequently) occurs when a third party program makes use of directx. I experience it most often with Netflix (which uses Silverlight). The problem can also be caused by Internet Explorer 9 (which has some acceleration features that may be enabled) and Firefox 4. This problem can also be caused by DirectX not being properly released by another program after its been closed, so double check your running software after a clean re-boot.

    From your CPU-Z validation, it's showing your GPU OC'd quite a bit. Is it running at those speeds all the time, and if so, can you put them back at default and reproduce the crash?

    My friends and I had the exact same problem (Usually around Gridania) until we tried something I saw in this forum.

    Go to FFXIV Config and set the following:

    -Video Settings

    Multisampling-> 2x MSAA
    General Drawing Quality -> Standard
    Background Drawing Quality-> High

    -Graphics

    Texture Quality -> Standard
    Texture Filtering-> Standard

    -----------------

    After doing this the Directx Error never appeared again. It's not really a matter of lowering the graphic quality.
    My friend's computer has that exact configuration and he even had the Multisampling off (meaning it was lower than what I listed) after he put it on 2x the problem was fixed.

    Try it, the Standard quality textures are almost the exact same as the High ones, you will basically notice the Item/skill icons being less defined.

    If it fixes your problem reply here so other players will know if it might work for them.

    Thank you for the suggestions, I've tried them now. I've had some luck with lowering the overclock, since it was factory overclocked I hadn't really considered it as a problem. So far it helped, but I really won't know until I've played for a few days, I think.

    In any case, thank you!

    Regarding the Anti-Aliasing. It depends entirely on your set up, but because of the differences in MSAA and CSAA, many people will find that even using a higher level of CSAA will improve performance over a lower level of MSAA. My system actually runs almost identical on 16xQ CSAA as it does on 4x MSAA. Might play with it a little to see if it helps (though on a GTX 2anything you might not see the improvement). Obviously if there is something about it NOT twigging out specifically when its set to 2x this won't help, but I personally haven't noticed the direct-x problem on my current settings.

    I ask because your GPU clocks are higher than mine and your RAM is at ridiculously high latency.

    Also, what temps was your card getting under full load and what voltages does it run?

    I only have this problem when I start a program that requires admin privileges in Windows 7. "Would like to to give this program permission to run blah blah.... Yes/No"

    Never get it any other time, but if I run something that starts and brings up that stupid Windows 7 permissions box then it crashes with "Cannot find Direct X device."

    Got tired of it:

    That solved my problem.
