I hate the idea of weapons stronger than relics, even if they become upgradeable.Checked with Yoshida-san.
While relic weapons are currently the most powerful, when we release weapons stronger than them, we plan on making it possible to enhance relic weapons. So with that said, keeping relic weapons as a base, we'll look into enhancements so that their stats can catch up to others if they lag behind.
Something better than artemis bow seems ridiculous.
Well as the level caps get higher they have to give those without relics something. I mean there should be things better than level 50 relics at higher levels. However with relics being upgradeable they'll catch up and can still be relevant.
It's a MMO, you need forward progression even for the people who have "topped out". By making Relics the #1 weapon you're going to have a small but significant portion of your player population having nothing better to strive for.
This wouldn't be a problem if Relic acquisition was more of an effort like it was in FFXI were it took a whole alliance several months to years to outfit 1 person with a relic. However in FFXIV you can get several people their relics in a fraction of the time it took 1 person in XI.
To create longevity in the game you can't have people at the finish line quickly and indefinitely.
Introducing weapons which are superior to relics give non hardcore gamers progression and upgrading the top tier relics to more powerful forms give harcore players progression. It's a win/win.
Unless you only play the game for the "I beat this game" mentality. Which begs the question, why do you choose to play a MMO which is constantly evolving and progressing, instead of an offline game which has a clear and defined finish line?
Welcome to the world of MMO's. In WoW, each expansion a legendary weapon came out that people sweat blood to obtain, then the next expansion came and they became out dated. It is a cruddy feeling, but that is what happens in a gear progressive game.
It is nice however they are making methods of upgrading them. Honestly, the relics can't be the most powerful forever. Do you not plan on ever getting a new weapon again? It is a fair balance however to keep them the most powerful, but you have to upgrade them again.
I love my Gae Bolg, but I will eventually see the next really cool spear I want with better stats.
We are not in a FFXI style gear system anymore, things are going to get outdated and new goals will be set every major patch. Your own opinion how you feel about it, but this seems to be the case in where the developers want to go with the game. My opinion is that I like it. I am actually not sure how I farmed Sky for over seven years in FFXI, I guess it "worked" for how that game was set up. Today I play a raid for less than six months and want the next thing, guess I am fallen into the basic MMO standards, but I find this method fun and always something new to look forward to.

Welcome to the world of Warcraft.
Welcome most MMO's to date outside of possibly GW2 (wherein there are no OMGWTFBBQ BiS). The gear treadmill is proven to work, and it always gives you something to look forward to in the reasonable future. You're still on the XI mentality, where people rage anytime a former BiS item loses it's luster.
We can either go back to the ffxi days of low drop rates, 3-7 day spawn periods, and archaic dragon's aery camping, or we can go with the new style which means your gear may become obsolete in <7 years time. The old mentality really only works with FFXI, it just doesn't mesh with modern gaming.

While the gear treadmill isn't original, it works, and works well in modern day MMO's. I do believe it will take some FFXIV players a while to get use to this. For how this game is set up, I do believe this will be one of the better routes to take for this game.
Any progression based MMO that increases its lvl caps/has expansions makes your previous expansion gear irrelevent when they do. Since FFXIV is adding Ilvl, I think they are about to become progression based.
They're most likely going to have their Relic weapon upgrade quest, hopefully not blasted with the copy/paste beam like Relic Reborn, but if they aren't retarded about it, no one is going to be able to just "Go right for" the upgrade just because they have the previous expansions relic weapon. They're going to have to progress towards being able to do it.
