They didn't say you could have 4 out at once, they just said there were 4 different summons. It's in one of the funky conference youtube videos.

I didn't say you could have 4 out at once... that's why I think they're going to be single-animation moves, otherwise there would be nothing stopping them from staying out.
Arcanists can use Carbuncle which is a permanent summon, but summoners won't be able to access him, so I think that's probably their way of stopping the job becoming too over-powered. But then again, if they do add multiple jobs per class then maybe there will be a job that can utilise more permanent pets, like in XI. If they do that though I think they'll more likely be elementals than actual Primals

I'd be VERY surprised if SUMMONERS weren't able to SUMMON carbuncle when an arcanist can.I didn't say you could have 4 out at once... that's why I think they're going to be single-animation moves, otherwise there would be nothing stopping them from staying out.

Also, in 2.0 WHMs get water spells; so I really doubt the same pattern of actions will be mantained

It was definitely mentioned that summoner's can't access Carbuncle, but again the source escapes me (this is all knowledge I picked up a while ago, so it's likely to have been the last live letter too).
Great news about Water though! I really miss it </3

"Instead of Carbuncle, summoners can call upon pets that are imbued with the power of the Primals."

The summons that SMN will have access to at first are Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, and Leviathan; yet Ramuh's artwork was shown and not Shiva. Good King Moogle Mog XII doesn't count, but I believe that he will be a boss for us since we can still obtain Primal Weapons.
I had a theory that as an Arcanist, if you fight a Primal and defeat it, you obtain the gemstone of the fallen Primal. You may be later able to equip it and then summon its essence. That begs to differ if you can only equip/summon one at a time, though.

Really? I knew Iffy, Garoody, and Titan were announced, I didn't know Leviathan was yet. Not that I'm complaining!
The gem thing kind of sounds similar to the mini-primal fights in XI, is that what you meant? In which case, that might be the method of obtaining the spell/ability for the 30/35/40/45 quests, if that's what they're doing with it.
It's an interesting thought, I hadn't considered it . Just means that the job abilities we obtain must relate/react to each of the gemstones in a different way.

I still sit in the corner of my room in the dark asking myself... why the hell carbuncle...
I don't like it. There are way better summons. I'll be ok with it if I can atleast kick it around and call it stupid.
Ironically, this is how I see carbuncle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle
my only problem with summoner is that it will be 50 when it actually comes out =(
