I vote option 1. This sounds like final fantasy tactics and I looping that systemNaoki Yoshida has stated that the development team is deciding between two options.
- Jobs become "specializations" within existing classes (i.e. a Gladiator can specialize to become either a Paladin or a Dark Knight).
- Jobs become "advanced jobs" in addition to existing classes (i.e. a Gladiator or Marauder can become a Dark Knight).
What we've been discussing thus far in several threads is which should be implemented, how either could be implemented, or whether any should be implemented at all.![]()

I wonder which advance classes they're going to release, I know we've talked about renaming them...but they still really haven't adressed the classic classes that really don't tie into any of the currently released classes.
I like CSLionheart's idea. It's the same as what I was thinking, and it would be really fun!
btw I was thinking I'd really LOVE the fftactics ideas implemented. Although I still wish they had originally stayed with classic jobs from the beginning. Since they already have new jobs, it's too complicated to try and redo things, so they have to go with what there is now. Unless they somehow CAN do something crazy...
well, I can post a thread to an image somebody made that would better explain the system toshi.

but to be honest, I think the best option is combine the Final Fantasy: Tactics idea with the World of Warcraft-esque talent system for specialization. It would appease everyone and I think give a well needed boost to the advance jobs to make them powerful enough with active/passive abilities.
Talent Trees are just so restrictive, though. Instead of adding options, they generally remove them. Now, I know cookie-cutter builds are inevitable, but I don't believe that having a system that could possibly accelerate the process is the best road to take.
What MMOs have you played?
I've played LOTRO, and naturally FFXI. I am currently playing Rift, and am finding it very restrictive.
For example, in Rift, it seems like combining the abilities of Paladin with Justiciar would make all the sense in the world. But because Paladins are a Warrior Profession, and Justiciars are a Cleric Profession, no matter what back story you may have for your character, no matter how many quests you character completes, your character can NEVER have access to both Soul Trees.
As an old-school D&D player, I find that restriction hinders the RPG aspect of the Rift MMORPG. Of course, that is only my personal opinion.
Alot of people are worried that the base classes will disappear. Since we all seem to agree that the FFT system would be great, I will use the example of.... I still play as a Squire. Even with Samurai, Ninja etc as available classes I quite enjoy playing as a Squire too. There's no reason that the Base Classes should dissapear. They can have further progression for sure. The base classes are very adaptable for Solo Play and small parties, as they can use many different skills. A solo Black Mage would be a Nuker but would get killed easy. A solo Conj or Thaum has Nukes and Heals and Buffs. The Tactics system would be amazing for this game. Giving the option for more quests and specialized stories.
There are no heroes yet in the game. There is no real threat. Advanced Classes will give us the chance when the need arises to become heroes. We are all just civilians of Eorza. Heroes like WOL, Terra, Cloud, Lighning, etc, were all just normal people living their lives before a great threat required them to become something more....

Honestly I'm just searching for the dev tags I have something to say and replying after reading a few posts.
I do feel better after reading the first few posts, I do agree, leave the current names alone. And this Advanced class deal first of me hearing about it I'm rather intrigued by it. Being able to unlock advanced classes doesn't sound like a bad idea at all this paladin bit sounds good, but to be honest there's 1 thing that this game is missing class wise. We have the mage that throws fireballs and heals wounds tha/con. the melee dps's the 2h weapons and the sword and shield, the ranged dps. but where the hell is my dual wield back stabbing class? I VERY much would like a class to have 2 weapons, and do some ungodly damage from behind, and when smacked by a monster flies 20 times farther cause they hella squishy. I just want my Sneak Attack none of this Blindside crap.
