Make the classic FF jobs available when certain conditions are met. Possibly a Final Fantasy Tactics-like system. For example, in order to unlock Paladin, you need Gladiator 30 and Conjurer 20. Then maybe you would be able to flag a quest to finally unlock the job.

Edit: Sorry, I should have made this more clear, I'm not for changing the current class names to classic Final Fantasy class names. What I'm asking for is the addition of classic FF classes to the ones we have now.
I agree! I think this would be an awesome addition to FFXIV. It would also make players lv certain jobs that they might not have level otherwise.

When WHM comes out, what happens to Con? When BLM comes out what happens to Con? Who will want a whm or blm in their party when Con can do both already? I don't see the point. If they do that, they have to throw away conjurer and thaumaturge. The other DoW classes are a little easier to tweak and still be useful.

SE can change existing weapon ( dagger on thief, langsword on pladin, shortsword/gladius on gladiator) and introduce new one for new job.

For Skill/ability of new job, in my opinion, is better Traits

For Expample : i have GLD 30 and CON 20 now i'm able to unlock Paladin (Longsword/Shield) at rank 20 i'll unlock, like normal ability, a Traits for increase damange versus undead mob type, at rank 30 a Taits to improved guard for given extra armor on party member when i'll use Guard ability, etc...

I am liking the ideas here. Unlockable classic FF classes complete with **interesting** quests to make the achieving of said class memorable, would be great.

As for the concern about the weapons, I agree that more generic versions of certain weapons might be weildable by more then one lass, resulting in a drop down menu. There could also be more specialized equipment that is made for specific classes, making changing jobs quicker, stat bonuses more direct and practical and allowing the art team to design things that are truly unique to the lore and styling of the class in question.

I also feel that it is good that people want to keep the current classes. While I adored being a white mage in FFXI and I would gladly play one again in FFXIV, I am also quite fond of my conjurer and would not want to have to give up the option to use a mix of white and black spells when I am in the mood. (It reminds me of Tellah and FuSoYa from FFIV.)

Overall though, change is both scary and exciting. It is neat that the community is being given so much opportunity to help this game grow.

What we're talking about here are the option for BLM or WHM to be advanced classes unlock for exemple by leveling both Con and Thm. Whm would have for exemple better cure and protect spell than con or thm but focus only on those. Blm would have better attack spell than con or thm. A Blm would be someone who leveled con, thm and then blm.

Even though advanced classes would give us more 'content' I'd actually rather see something closer to a specialization system that replaces the current classes at a certain rank without actually fully replacing them. Conjurer becomes either a BLM or a WHM depending on the path they choose at a specific rank (lets say rank 30) and they can change between the two only while in town. This forces a party role, while still maintaining the flexibility of the current system. They can even make this deeper by making certain weapons or armor only usable on a certain spec thus making the class almost like 2 classes in one for someone to choose and they get the same depth.

If they were to go the advanced classes route though... They would need to decide if they were going to basically make the current classes disposable in the long term or completely rework them to be a shadow of their current selves. The current crop of classes have abilities all over the place. No defined role and thanks to the ability sub system, little to differentiate from the next class. If they rebalance it and include advanced classes... how does that work with the armory system as it currently stands? Would they add new a class of 'sword' or 'shield' into the game to make someone a Paladin? The arms system as it currently stands can't support advanced classes unless they really change it up. Too many of the classic classes already have their weapons taken.

Yeah there'd need to be a lot of balancing. The problem with DoMs is that, aside from abilities unlocked within a certain class, there's no specific reason to be that class. A Thaumaturge can make fantastic use of Cure, so why wouldn't a Black Mage?

I dunno. There's a lot of tweaks that would need to be done. Greater penalties for using non-class abilities would be a must.

Why would you want that? Basically, you would need to scrap a LOT of the current system to pull it off. The problem is, a lot of ppl love their con/thm. Either you are going to make WHM lame, and not worth ranking, or make con obsolete. I don't see how it can be balanced properly as a new class. I DO think it could be pulled off as a specialization.

I'm not happy with the DoM as they are. I just don't see how they can add WHM and BLM to the mix without screwing major stuff up. Too bad they didn't have it to begin with.

If they had greater penalties for non class abilities, or had ANY of them that weren't cross class, that would go a long way to making classes more unique. I think they could do that without changing the names and adding a whole bunch of classes or specializations.
