I'm with OP on this, the FFT style advanced class system would rock, although I do foresee some issues with being forced to play somewhat unrelated classes to get to the one you want. Using the example given, I am first and foremost a Paladin on any game I play, but as suggested I would need to get to rank 20 on Conjurer, which as a mage class is something I can't stand playing. Considering a Paladin's playstyle is much closer to a Gladiator than a mage, this system would require some careful consideration to make sure people aren't forced to do things they find boring to get to "the fun part".

Yeah, I feel the same way really. It'd be really neat if it were something like this..

Yeah... it would be nice to see traditional classes... but like, if Conj already has fire, blizzard, stone, etc... and it makes it hard to add a Black Mage. Similarly, if Lancers still use polearms, then it's hard to add a Dragoon. Also given that the weapon determines the class, you couldn't have classes that potentially share weapons (e.g. Pupper Masters and Monks, Thieves and Dancers, etc...)

Advanced classes that are unlocked, yes, please. This maintains the current lore, adds a bit more questing content, and brings in classic Final Fantasy class names elegantly.

I think i'd be alright with FFT style so long as the stat bonuses for these advanced classes dont make them required to play. (sort of, but not exactly, like needing a secondary class in XI for the bonuses or risk not getting a group ever)

As long as we dont keep the zodiac system ;p

PS. oracle was my favorite, it never gets any love though.

Maybe CON can stick with the current lame spell animations and BLM spells actually look like they blow things up.

Or could you? I'm sure, in addition to all the individual class changes planned, there are changes to the Armory system as a whole in the works as well. Maybe instead of just changing weapons to change your class, you could choose a weapon, then choose between several classes that share the ability to use that weapon? I'm sure there are ways to make it smoother than that, but it's just a thought.

I am for the idea of the classic jobs being unlockable. I know this isn't something casual players like to hear that at the beginning not everything is available to them, but even they will end up using it as a goal to grind through the game.

I don't really care whether or not they change the names so much, I just want more distinction and a stronger class definition for ALL of the combat classes.

Why does everyone insist on changing the names to classic final fantasy staples?

I'd rather a system where you could envisage a final fantasy class and make one yourself, using the armory system. It's called role playing, maybe you've seen that somewhere? Oh yeah, probably in the form of "Massive online Role Playing game".

They should keep the generic classes that we have at the moment to be kind of like all-encompassing classes. And within these classes you should have the ability to create your own jobs. Notice the distinction between classes and jobs.

It's like, you go to class to learn. You learn to be able to get a job. Applying this to Final Fantasy XIV, the classes we have now could be the basis for learning, and our final jobs could be anything we so desire: Black mage, red mage, white mage, paladin, etc.

The only problem we have at the moment is that we currently have no support from SE with making these classes. If we want to make our own BLM, we just can't. We're still a Thaumuturge/Conjurer. So it fails.

But that doesn't mean it can't work if they try.

I think they should stick by the philosophy of the armory system ("make your own job"), but support us in our efforts to creating those jobs. The Blackmage gear sets, for example, could give you certain buffs to types of magic, and enfeeble your ability to carry out other kinds of magic.

To use an example, equipping a full blackmage gear set could effectively render your healing spells useless but heighten your attacking spells. This way you can be a blackmage if you so wish, but still within the confines of the armory system, and also still provide you with a bit of creativity and freedom to mix up spells and abilities.

Not everything in the world has to be handed to you and digested passively. An MMO should be about multiple people playing the game as multiple people. Not just about several hundred of the same people with all the same abilities and roles.

The armory system allows for the creation of your designer build already, we should be embracing that, not shooting it down. THe classic jobs can coexist within the boundaries of the ever-flexible armory class system.
