I agree with many who have stated the "Classic" jobs should be the Advanced Classes which take a combination of required traits from their corresponding classes.

    My Suggestion:
All Armory Roles (PGL, GLD, CON, etc) should be Rank 50 or less - These would have more generic armor types, and would have are a fixed number of actions and traits which are needed to master the basic classes.
All Advance Roles (WHM, DRK, MNK, etc) should be required to be Rank 51 plus - These would have the classic equipment designs, and have contain Role-Specific actions and traits like Steal, Ancient Magics, and so-on. (this would likely require the shifting of existing actions assigned to basic classes)

For example: For Monk, you would need to unlock certain skills from Pugilist, say all the ones up to 50, and some Marauder and Gladiator skills from lower levels, say 20 or 30. Once you have met those requirements, you could set your class to Monk, and have a new set of skills open to you above 50.
Same thing for Thief; you would need Gladiator (for Dagger Skill), and Pugilist (for Evasion). WHM would need Conjurer and Sentinel (Shield).

Once you reach 51, you were given two sets of AP; one set for non-role-specific skills, and one set for role-specific skills. This would allow classes to still be able to customize their list of skills to make them a bit more individualized.

Of course, this is just an example, and I'm sure there would be issues trying to balance the requirements, but I think this would be an enjoyable way of introducing the classic FF names. Also, it would be one more thing for a player to Strive Towards; which is missing a bit from the game right now.

It doesn't take too much of a stretch of the imagination to associate "Pugilist" with "Monk". Just saying.

I'm pretty sure Shakespeare wrote something on the subject of naming at some point or another...

I will say however that I agree with a FFTactics sort of unlock system were that to be implemented, I just wouldn't want SE change up the current names to have to "throw in the towel" on an issue that may just be perceived as opposed to a real thing.

Pugilist is someone who fights with their fists.

While a Monk is as well, a Monk is also someone who has a spiritual connection to himself so deep that he can use his inner energies to heal and deal more damage outwardly. Hes also more disciplined.

In the same vein a Berserker is also a Pugilist, and a Thief, or Dancer can be a Pugilist.

Pugilist is the class, Monk is the Job. don't rename the classes, add job titles that increase specialization and reward you for doing so.

If your a Pugilist with Monk as your Job Title you get bonuses for using Monk tenant abilities like Chi-Blast.

As an added bonus of the Job Title System over Renaming Classes, both a Lancer or a Gladiator can be a Paladin with this system

As well as many other combinations.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

I mentioned this on BG countless times but I'm posting here in hopes that devs see it... These are the cliff notes cause I don't want to dig through 20+ page discussions.

Specializations for current classes that branch off into FF classes (examples below):

    - New quest from guild lets you walk down the path of WHM or BLM as a CON. Once quest is completed you can start allotting points into either spec. One quest chain per spec that eventually leads to class specific armor quests w/ boss fights. Since changing classes is done by changing weapons in this game; changing specs would need to be done either from an alternate menu or somewhere back in town/aetheryte. My vote is for scrapping the Physical point allotment system and using that for class specs that way people can swap on the go. No arbitrary penalties on swapping except 0 MP; this means let people switch whenever they want as opposed to the disaster that is currently switching points over (2-3 hours?).

    - Quest available at 30 CON.
    - WHM: Less nuking power more heals. Learns better curing/protective spells. Spec into talents that increases healing potency, cast times, etc.
    - BLM: Less healing and more nuke damage. Learns better offensive/debuffs spells. Spec into talents that increases damage potency - think FFXI merits but something a little more out there.
    - What happens with CON? CON would be the spec-less class (think any class in WoW that hasn't spent a point - very weak and almost useless). Once you put even 1 point into the other specs you are now that class. Also impose a minimum number of points per tree so that people stick to their paths. Otherwise this will lead people to try and balance both and be bad in the process. Or you could not and they'll figure it out themselves.

    Other examples:

GLA -> PLD (tank) and DRK (dps)
ARC -> RNG (dps) and MSK (Musketeer or other Gun user - dps or buffer) <- This would require relabeling of weapons.
THM -> RDM (heals/buffer) and TMM (dps/debuffer) (Time Mage. Who is a Tactics fan!?)
LNC -> DRG (dps) and... um somebody help me out.
PUG -> MNK (possible tank or dps. Pick one and go with it or it'll be a PUG again...) or THF (dps) or something else.

If any of this sounds familiar... you probably played WoW or ANY OTHER MMO on the market. lol

I honestly feel this is the way to go with these classes. The thing is to pick a role for each and stick to that. Do not let them be "Jack of All" and "Master of None" because then you get what we have now. Lack of predefined roles in group oriented combat is what is making these classes bland and lifeless - they could also use some more interesting abilities with better animations. If I see my Gladiator spin one more time............

Feel free comment and give your own take.

Edit: Saw it mentioned that the advanced class should be available at max level. Thats an awful idea. These classes will define your role; thats something you should learn on your way to max level not when you get there. Which is why I said Lv30. Not too low level but not high enough that will discourage people.

    That should read more like:

GLA -> RDM (requiring THM and CON leveled to some degree to unlock)

It'd be tricky to insert the mandatory rapier, though. The advance/prestige class approach would probably work better towards that idea.

I like that names on ffxiv, just give a little more personality to each class with singular skills and AF's or something like that.

I'm liking some of these ideas. I miss the traditional jobs and armor that represents them. I'm hoping that they bring back Black Mage, White Mage, and Red Mage. They could split the spells from Conjurer and Thaumaturge into those three categories and that would solve the class uniqueness problem too.

Ie: Fire, Burn, Flare, Scourge, Drain, Siphon MP for Black Mage.
Cure/Sacrifice, Raise, Protect, Shell, -na Spells, Banish for White Mage.
Dia, Bio, Paralyze, and the lower tier nukes and heals, and higher attack than Black and White Mages for Red Mage.
    Something along those lines.

Changes to the Disciplines of War Class names are pretty straightforward: Gladiator=Paladin, Pugilist=Monk, Marauder=Warrior, Lancer=Dragoon, Archer=Ranger(Can possibly stay Archer)

2 hours would be cool too. What do you think?

... Just please don't call Lancer Dragoon and give it ugly purple armor!

I am much more interested in how the game plays rather than the names. Naming is pointless if they don't do anything to change how terrible the jobs are.

The absolute best thing about FFXI was the job system. No other MMO has ever come close. I would be perfectly happy if they scrapped their armoury system and just simply put in the FFXI job system. I mean, its OK to borrow a few successful things from previous games, just don't go all out and make a clone!

I think the job system in FFXI is what caused me to be addicted to it for so many years, I never had to roll an alt.
