I WANT to assume they are 'good' guys. Good in the sense that they don't want countless Eorzeans to die ... Least he's got a winning record.

Better a small percentage of survivors than a total percentage of casualties, I guess. The hardships faced in umbral eras seem inevitable, so if someone is triggering them, as you say, at least these "horrible" people have a 100% recovery rate. Big picture. Again, this is just one possible outcome of one possible theory made EONS before we have enough information to begin making such an assessment. Just a thought.

I wonder if this is just an Aldenard/Vyldabrand thing or if its associated with the entire Hydaelyn world.

I'm under the distinct impression that once an umbral era starts, it's not long before the whole world is feeling the hurt... Not that this point of view has been embraced by everyone in the world yet...
