Perhaps he defected to the empire. Perhaps he was part of the Ascian influence in Limsa Lominsa!

It would be great to see him re-appear as a traitor. Perhaps in an expansion pack cutscene, we could see him become a similar force to what we're there to fight, and it would parallel our own progress through that story.
I was kinda thinking SE might use them like the GM controlled event characters for PVP and such.
