I assume coordination is necessary for events, thus some LSs like to be able to communicate instructions to members with TS. But for an xp party? really? Do you really need to be told what to do at every turn in an xp party?
The person that made the thread stated “so not everyone is for "japanese onry" servers, like everyone is saying over here.” So my post is directed that this statement. Just like the person that made this thread, I am just stating my observation and experiences in ffxi.
Dosent japan has english in school? i mean rest of the world has english at school basic stuff so you can atlest communicate with others.
That is a very dangerous assumption to make.
Not many actually have english in school and what there is is so awfully broken it hardly lends itself to realtime communication. It's generally just sufficient to grasp the overall meaning of a text when you read, no more than that.
The unwillingness of most Japanese players I encountered in ffxi, to play with N.A. players was not due to a language barrier. Look at it from a N.A. player point of view. Japanese is not taught in schools in the United States. However, most North American players I knew; did not have a problem joining a Japanese xp party. Even though these North American players did not know any Japanese. That is a very dangerous assumption to make.

Oh, i'm not talking about that, Caine. I mean sure I have the best experiences with JPs, all randoms I've met were pretty okay to join my parties, one of my friends has the ability to pull a full team of relic-wielder JPs out of his hat at will and all that.
I was just commenting that "Everyone knows english anyway" is an awful assumption.
No. The English courses in Japan is perfectly fine, it's actually a requirement for the basic level to be learned for graduation in many areas (not sure about Major cities though) so it's not limited and bad quality. What you probably meant was the lack of need to continue english after your graduation unless you go into business, otherwise there's almost no reason to learn english in Japan since their national language isn't English but most younger generations can understand and hold a basic conversation in English, just lack of confidence.

if i had to ask something in the street and I don't know how to say in JP, i would target high school kid who are at least interested in trying
but after it's pitch black unless they are interested in foreign culture
I once had a Japanese lady who was an english teacher asking me, a french guy, some things in english
and I was thinking this lady who's english was not great was teaching to kids...
in the current system they have no incentive in being proficient at english because still not so many foreigners here nor many foreign programs on TV (after JP program, the most popular is Korean). I think I saw Glee once on TV but it7s a super odd hours...
so no, I am absolutely not surprised. Especially not from most gamers who i guess have no interest in travelling and such and have a pool of gamers huge enough to play within themselves without needing another language to enjoy

Im more worried about the english speakers being torn in half between staying on a JP based server and those who move to the US based servers, that will leave even less english speakers on the servers to begin with. I hope the relaunch, and PS3 launch are hugely successful to assure a strong population, because honestly peak times and whatnot are of no real consequence. Every other MMO i have played with regional servers has people on around the clock. Not everyone works the fabled 9-5 with weekends off lol (me being one of them, damn casino industry)
