We have news from Yoshida himself about the Alpha videos and testing.

Hello! Producer/Director Yoshida here.

We plan on releasing Alpha videos as much as we can every week and not just in Producer letters, as we would like to show everyone A Realm Reborn’s progress as well as inform you of the game’s content.

While participation timing will differ because of the selection order, we would like to have as many of you as possible participate in the Alpha and Beta tests, so please hang tight!

Even if they're really short, can we please get a look at 1920x1080, texture detail highest, 8xAA? While everyone's qqing about the hair, I'm looking at the background and having flashbacks to Whitegate. /panic.

Aliasing at the floor line, and the saturation and luminosity are as flat as XI. If we lose the liquid look of 1.0 even if we max out the video settings, I'll be a bald lalafell.

If we have to wait to have the actual client to see it maxed out, so be it. But if we can get just 30 second clips of maxed out in game mpeg4 ideally not jammed through YouTube's compressors that would be nice.

No biggie if not. Certainly not as much of a crisis as the hair and the boobs.

Watching this video again for the third time now. I'm so happy with the direction of this game already.

Final Fantasy XI is magical and alive. I started that game when I was 12. It left a huge impression on me and will always have a huge place in my heart. I still sign on occasionally for some nostalgia and I turn 21 in 2013.

Final Fantasy XIV as it is right now, felt very stranger-like. And no where near as magical as XI was is.

A Realm Reborn, just by watching this character creation demo and listening to this beautiful music, it's almost as if it's actually a reborn XI...saying, "Welcome back, Rex."

AFAIK the alpha build is not being updated, that's why the lighting is still flat. The lighting was better in the post-alpha footage we saw in the last live letter and they stated they weren't finished with it yet (same for water).

Wait, what? It won't be a one time thing? You can change it at any time?

There will be a one time total character appearance reset if you so wish, within 6 months of 2.0 release. There will also be a barber shop, which does not cover things like face type, etc, that the one time chance to change does.
