Isn't this what the targeting mods are for? Not to mention, your idea only works when you have two mobs. If you have more than that and it auto targets the wrong mob, you're going to have to manually switch targets anyway.

ugh... I failed to tell exactly what I meant. Sorry, but I was working and writing that post on my smartphone and I got completely forgotten about that piece of information. The left and right buttons (assuming you refer to the D-pad) during combat are reserved for navigating the combat UI. If you mean Rb and Lb or R1 and L1, then L1/Lb is the auto run button, and R1/Rb is the active/passive toggle buttons.
(this refers to a preset control scheme and not a custom setup)
The triggers/R2-L2 are the macro toggles, and therefore are already in use.
I meant: Press the Left and Right button on your D-Pad while holding the Auto-run button. While holding that button, the skillbar will not receive commands from the D-Pad and you can cycle through targets.
I deeply apologize, I'll never ever build posts with my phone from now then since I can be lead to distractions while writing =D
In answer to Dreamer, in case of 3 monsters, the auto-targeting will take the closest one to your PC.
It is possible to have both the "Hold down Auto-run and press the arrows left to right to switch target" and "Target the closest near you after it gets KO'd". That could be another good idea.

I feel like the game really needs something like this. Behest for example.. I'm in a party, and we take on a group of 3 monsters. I target the first monster and attack, it dies, then I'm trying and trying to target the next monster to attack it, but it takes too long and I'm unable to even get a hit in. Exact same thing happens for the third monster. It would be SO much easier if I just auto targeted the next monster claimed by my party. This is my biggest issue with parties right now.
Edit: And I can't use the new targeting system, :\ it actually makes things more difficult for me.
Edit again: I'd even be happy with an "/assist name" command. lol

For that problem, I'd suggest a quickfix:I feel like the game really needs something like this. Behest for example.. I'm in a party, and we take on a group of 3 monsters. KEYBOARD USER:
Press F8 and it will target the nearest monster or NPC in your line of sight.
GAMEPAD USER:
Bind in a macro the command:
/targetnpc
and then you can use the macro list button in your gamepad to access it.
That command simply targets the nearest monster or NPC in your line of sight.
I hope this helps as a hotfix!
Seems like an unnecessary and actually detrimental automation to me. People should always have to select their own target (and yes, be able to get it wrong if they aren't attentive/focused enough) IMHO.
You are right. As a player you have to select your own target and kick the butt out of it.
But I was writing about attacking a group, which is usually 3-4, maybe 5 monsters, and those are your monsters and yours alone (and your party's). With a gamepad, it could be easier and more convenient to switch between targets if you could switch to the next monster of the group when it gets KO'd, or switching between targets when you have focused another target, just like Tessa wrote, which is actually impossible with the gamepad.
You can easily change targets with the keyboard with the pressure of TAB or with the mouse.
Yeah, FFXI had this I believe. See no reason why it couldn't be added to FFXIV.
