Purely for the fact that the involvement of RNG makes better pieces of melded gear more rare. Do I think it should be involved in the relic quest? TBH, I haven't given that much thought, since as I said, I haven't really focused on the quest.

Yeah but you can make pieces rare without RNG - similar to quite a few of FFXI quests were actually. Long ass grind is a replacement - and one I would much rather have. RNG is amazingly annoying as people can go 0/17 or 3/4 the amount of work is disproportional and really at least for myself - makes no respect for the item. "Hey I got a relic!" "Good job for being lucky, regardless of the time, skill and energy you put into it."
I understand they wanted to turn the market with the system - you can do that without RNG.

But there is nothing stopping the devs from adding those types of quests in addition to materia melded gear. Nobody ever said we could only have it one way or the other. But it sounds like you're thinking of the materia's involvement in the relic quest only, even though you stated materia should go away. Sounds like you want to throw the baby out with the bath water to me.Yeah but you can make pieces rare without RNG - similar to quite a few of FFXI quests were actually. The materia system is an -excellent- way to create long term goals. I feel they sorely missed that and turned into randomness. Materia is being misused in my opinion as its potential is far greater being in another form.
And certaintly you can have both - but I dont see the point of RNG at all. Unless it "logically" needs to be there.
Like in the Golden Saucer you shouldnt be able to "build" your chances. Should always be random. BUt things related to crafting - specially things related to the core of the game, why so unnecessary it is. Or at least hybridize the system to make it biased to work and skill but still allow some randomness for the gamble addicts.
(I will always be putting this speech up where possible lol - I despise the RNG, even when I get lucky myself)
To your EDIT: Yes I want the whole system scrapped - I've made my own suggestion (I need to update that thread >.>) on what may replace it which maintains many of the core elements of what the materia system does well. While removing annoying random aspects that just prove luck > skill, time, energy. I really do feel the materia system is a pos.

So again, you're only thinking of materia in terms of it's involvement in the relic quest, which is fine I suppose, as long as we're discussing it in this thread. But I still think the materia system as a whole, is great. Should it be involved in the relic quest? Well, I'm inclined to agree that it should not, just as I think the chances of getting hamlet seals should be raised. I agree, as far as there should not be as much RNG involvement in the relic quest. But to state that the entire materia system needs to be removed is missing the point a bit.The materia system is an -excellent- way to create long term goals.
