People getting jobs to max level in a few days because of Abyssa... This along with seeing 14 coming out, showing just how dated the game had become, and knowing that sooner or later that perfect gear set you worked for years on will mean nothing sealed the deal.
This happens in every MMO. but in most MMOs, the endgame didn't stay stagnant for 6 years before finally evolving- it was much more gradual. the level cap rise kinda should have either happened several years earlier, or never at all. People got too attached to what they had.

You didn't see stuff like that in other games. In WoW every time the cap went up everyone happily went after the new gear- there was never this super strong attachment to current gear that there was in XI.

This ^ very much so.. salvage peeps really got a sore butt that has lasted way more than it should have....my main was BLM in FFXI and for some reason ppl thought that if it had to do with BLM it had to be sold for 50mil so each update with upgraded gear was a loss and cost of millions.. did i bitch? Never i was happy that my job was going to pull bigger numbers

I enjoyed Dynamis for years, partly because i kept lvling new jobs over the years and always needed/wanted more gear drops from it.

I also really loved lvling up in XI. I just had fun making my character stronger and more versatile for whatever my LS needed. I would even skip LS events when i had found a "good" EXP party. For one thing, it took longer to do and people with many jobs at lvl 75 were valued/respected more than ppl with all jobs at 50 are here on XIV (pre Abyssea, at least). Hell, i never even got every job to 75 (or 80+) on XI, and i played for 6.5 years. EXP parties just felt so much more fulfilling than they do here.

I've had everything 50 for a long time now, but even back in the day before you could aoe the crap out of groups of mobs, before the implementation of chain bonus...EXP parties were just not as fun as they were in XI. I don't see it being any more fun these days either with the implementation of chains, etc. I actually kind of dread leveling Arcanist in 2.0. In XI it seemed like every fight had more strategy involved instead of just mindless killing if that makes any sense.

I hate to agree with Max due to the negative tone of his post, but alas I must. I have seen nothing but pandering to the "15 minute" gamers in the information released to date about ARR. I would not consider myself hardcore, but the vast majority of MMORPGs today lack the risk factor in the leveling process that makes games fun for me and ARR looks to be aiming for 2 second fights that are simply a test of how fast you can press enter. While many people like that kind of challenge it is not why I play any FF, my preference is more strategy based challenge. I am patiently waiting though in hopes that the small amount of information we have so far has been misleading.

On topic, Flame me all you like for this but XI did a lot of things right when it came to giving "casuals' and "hardcore" players something out of the same game. Take dynamis for example was a good blend of something both groups of people could get something out of, armor was a easy grab at 3hrs max twice a week while the hardcore had the weapons to work long term on all out of the same event. I do not want a repeat of the same old same old but I do wish they would take a serious look at the content from XI that appealed to so many people to keep doing it, and figure out why people did it. Then of course bring us something new with those reasons in mind.

I couldn't agree more with this sentiment. Whilst a lot of people have already gone nuts saying "WE DON'T WANT XI-2 RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE" You can take ideas from another successful MMO without cloning it entirely. Look at the most favoured content in XI and create it for XIV with it's own spin. Sure you need some fresh ideas too, but I'd have no problem if they had content similar to let's say; Salvage in XIV.

Too bad the world is going to end before ARR has the chance to launch. All this good advice gone to waste...

What I'd like to see is Tiered Endgame Systems.
Sky, Sea, ZNM, Magians & Abyssea NMs

These are all examples of events that took time, were generally fun, rewarding and some had cool areas connected to them.

this is pretty much the main and only thing that i would need to make me happy too, wtf happen to mmo's. pvp mmo's all are getting into full server, faction on faction stuff ..even the cheesy mmo's like gw2, but pve mmo's that are supposed to be A+ titles can't give us more the 16people battles? it's bs, but i truely hope to see full linkshell events in ffxiv or at least something in the 30+ people runs and not stupid open world events i mean real events that last 2-3hrs and need coordination like the above mentioned. not stuff that 30people show up to and is made dumbed down for just that reason.

I think if they were to bring aspects of endgame like this to 14, you'll see content trickle in a lot less frequently. The systems worked in 11, but only because 75 cap didn't move for damn year 6-7 years. Also, since ENTIRE builds were based on solely on gear, you were constantly side-grading, so most of endgame never became obsolete. FFXIV's gear system is not indicative of that. Raids will most likely be tiered, but not in the same way that you're thinking.

well they can make drops from these types materia better then any others, that way they are put on the good/best gears that keep changing. granted if gear keeps raising so do stats/newer materias but it would be easy to work with since they aren't new gears they need to add to them or anything. it's as simple as a +8stat changing it's way to +20 depending on what level the gear you put it on is as it changes. i dunno just a thought. it's not like they can't think of something to fit it in.
