It seems they want to take ffxiv offline sooner then expected. Why was this decision made to cut our saves off sooner then expected?

uhm.. time zones?

1 nov JP = 31 oct NA

maintance start 31 october and end 1° november. It isn't sooner.

I think the bigger question is why are they taking our characters down in the first place - they're not even in alpha, and they plan on reviving the servers in a non saving state.
Seems like we could have played a few more months before even bothering to switch into beta.

Because transfering the data takes some time, and we can't just update the character data whie they're transfering the data. Even if we are just in Alpha, they need to not only transfer everything, but make sure everything transfered will work as intended, all while working non stop on A Realm Reborn.I think the bigger question is why are they taking our characters down in the first place - they're not even in alpha, and they plan on reviving the servers in a non saving state.

Indeed he said it would take about a month. As seeing that we are many months away from even thinking about an open beta, I dont see why we have to do it early.Because transfering the data takes some time, and we can't just update the character data whie they're transfering the data. Can't disagree that it shouldn't take that long... However, better to get it done early than late, I guess. I've played F2P MMOs where, when transferring to another hosting service, a lot of stuff went overlooked and a lot of players were pissed (i.e. Cabal Online and Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE, to varying degrees). Just kinda promptly get it done and stuff.

I think during alpha and perhaps early player base closed beta they should maintain the current server - and at the same time test their transfer capabilities so players make sure they didnt forget anything. Can't disagree that it shouldn't take that long... As it is now I'm screenshotting my inventory/quest/quest items before the servers go down just in case they cant transfer everything properly.
Did you read my post? It said "about", I was being pessimistic but I left the famous SE vagueness in the meaning of the sentence.
What kind of stuff are you smoking? testing will be starting soon after the maintenance.I think the bigger question is why are they taking our characters down in the first place - they're not even in alpha, and they plan on reviving the servers in a non saving state.

They explained a long time ago that it will take months to process all of the save data. That is why they have to do it now. The sooner they start, the sooner they finish and the sooner we can play ARR.
Quityerwhinin, for lack of a more appropriate term.
They said before even introducing it that the 7UE storyline would be a once in a lifetime, exclusive to current players experience. Once it's gone, it's gone, this was said WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY in advance, so nobody has any valid cause to complain.
