    They already did.

No capes in the near future.

Unfortunately, implementing capes is difficult, and we have no concrete plans for them currently.

Capes would of course need to be fluttering and waving, but to to so would require a large upgrade in the game specs and we decided that it would be impractical.

Let me clarify what I meant:

It's not that fluttering and waving are impossible, as you can currently see such motion on equipment like skirts.

It's just that capes are large, spanning from the shoulder to the hips, and the model data required for rendering such a large area with fluttering and waving would be too high an increase to be practical.

That old post is in reference to their Crystal Tools engine. The new engine (being internally developed by the Luminous guys) will support DX11, which is why I brought the question up again. It is reinforced by this recent interview at GamerEscape where Yoshi-P stated:

...As for DX 11, the first thing the dev team feels we have to do after the release of 2.0 is have a graphics engine that can accommodate the high-end computers and let those players have the highest quality graphics, smooth playability and a lot of different characters on screen- not the 40 we have now but having lots of characters displayed without having performance lag. But we’re also looking at the users with lower end computers as well and being able to create a system where you don’t have to have a high end PC to play. It also means having a system that will also handle the PS3 hardware as well that you have and just because it’s on the PS3 doesn’t mean it’s going to have lower quality. Maintaining quality for all three platforms- for high-end, low-end and PS3 and having an engine that will support this is what we’re aiming for with 2.0 and once that’s completed, and we hope to have that completed for 2.0, the next step will be to get the game ready for DX 11. So it’s in our schedule but we decided to make sure we had those three things covered by 2.0 and pushed back DX 11 for now. It’s not off the table thought and definitely the next thing we do after this.
Your example was pasted from a thread about the possibilities of DX10/11 (from back in June); and DX9 limitations, where you were using DX9 as a reason to why we can't have something like capes.

In the same post, you said it yourself:

All you've done is strengthen my case.

Err, I'm not sure what you think I'm trying to say with my posting of the dev post. You asked for a dev response, and I reminded you that they already talked about it.

They said that they don't have any plans. 2.0 won't be for another year, so you'd have to wait at least that. Then Direct X 11 support is after that, and even when that's in, there's no guarantee that they'll put in capes.

FYI, the post I quoted and translated is from a JPN thread that asked if we can have capes in the game. Just like this thread.

Sorry for being defensive. Your post just came off like you were a cape-hater at first.

These forums have done something to my poor soul...

There's an old saying from my server when I played UO...
"Friends don't let friends wear capes."

No matter how good you think it looks... *sigh* City of Heroes lets you wear all the capes you could ever want :P even get to fly with them.

Now if they gave us cloaks, real cloaks, not just renamed capes. I'de be all for that. Hell even mantels could work.

Can we have all three? Capes, cloaks and mantels?
    I'd really enjoy that!

LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.

I think capes are more geared towards super-heroes—like City of Heroes. I don't think it would fit in with the art direction of FFXIV.

    /facepalm

This statement always irks me. Don't tell me capes don't fit into a fantasy setting or FFXIV for that matter. You may also want to refer to my sig.

The Incredibles was a great movie y'all. But seriously, lets keep superheroes out of this conversation.

    I don't miss them.
The actual visual of clothes on FF XIV is very cool for me.
I think I should prefer more gears with the city style, they make we feel proud about our place.
