I don't think anyone is endorsing software mouse.

The main problem with trying to emulate the "norm", is that SE have shown no signs of trying to evolve the "norm". Usually a game released in 2012 will try to evolve or make improvements on a game released in 2004, but SE seem insistent that everything about WoW was perfect. Which is sort of an admission of incompetence on SE's part. Or at the very least, a lack of self esteem.

We are constantly seeing games try to push the barriers nowadays, and SE just doesn't do that. It's like they have blinders on which prevent them from seeing things that even FFXI did right, let alone every other MMO that wasn't WoW. There are so many games coming out of Korea (what else is new, amirite?) but every single one of them shows us what's possible. Mounted combat, aerial combat, sandbox features, open world features, the list goes on. And SE just wants to stand idly by and release some quests with some voiceovers. It's really just a pitiful show of effort.

There's a lot of stiff competition out there (sure these games wont be in beta until 2012 and may never see western shores) but they show us what's possible today, while SE just show us what was possible in 2004.

Even the Elder Scrolls Online is pushing the status quo set by WoW in 2004. Basically every game does something to improve the formula. Except SE. And who's going to even look at the game, let alone play it, if they just repeat a tired, unambitious formula?

From the very first announcements Elder Scrolls didn't seem as anything else than WoW 2.0. It's just recently that they started to say totally opposite things - I guess they've got scared when no one showed interest aside of the die-hard ES fans who thought the game would be another god's gift to humanity like every game in the series ;p

Well, exactly. When they first mentioned Elder Scrolls as nothing more than a quest-spam progression game with nothing new, everyone flew into a frenzy asking "what's the point?". Nobody really wanted that.

SE obvious didn't get the memo though...

I think wow clone is a legit thing. for isntance. we had runescape, which was nothing like ragnarok, which was nothing like everquest.. which was nothing like ffxi, which was nothing like WoW. now pretty much every game closely resembles WoW. its bad when a game has been out for 2 months, and for a guild to invite you, you must have WoW raid experience and know wow terms. wow is great at advertizing, hell they even have their own south park episode.

i have played it up to 70 when it was max level, i was just not a fan of "run around and grab all the quests and then go hit stuff" leveling, and annoying raids. pvp arenas were great until people started cheating the system to get their entire guilds in and faceroll everyone. personally in ARR, i'll be content finding leveling dungeons, sounds fun to me

How can we even call FFXIV 2.0 out on that if all we really know about it is it's bare minimum? If you break down any MMO's bare minimum, they all sound the same. I am not saying FFXIV is unique and bringing something new to the table, but at the same time, I am not going to say they are not. People should really see "everything" the game is bringing to us and then judge from there.

Even the Armory System itself sounds great and unique. Instead of making five different toons, trying to earn achievements on them (WoW actually fixed this and made the achievements account bound), every job and role can be done on one character. Not many MMO's use this concept. This is a very appealing aspect to the every day MMO player.

I'm not calling you out and saying you are wrong, but people really should see what they have in store for us before casting judgement upon it.

The Armory system and crafting systems really are SE's saving grace. Oh and graphics I suppose. Luckily, they'll always have that to fall back on.

But Im pretty sure if the dev team were working on any other amazing things, they'd be boasting about it by now. Also, considering Yoshi said that they were going to copy WoW and achieve a "standard" first and foremost, and then make interesting and novel features later, then it's kind of safe to assume it'll be quest spam and dungeons on release day, with instanced housing if that gets boring. EDIT: Forgot that's not in at release.

...one of the problems with Final Fantasy XIV was that there wasn’t that direction, they didn’t know what the standard was and they never played World of Warcraft... With Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn we don’t want to create many new things, we first want to start of getting this global standard and then adding that Final Fantasy feel.

Where have you been? There are many other quotes like that where Yoshi's saying they're going to copy "the standard" and then once that's done make interesting things later (after release).

first you said yoshi is copying WoW, now you say he is copying the mmo standard. You might have a case of Romnesia.

Yoshi never said he is copying WoW. but yes, they're going to start from the standard and work from there.

I asked for a source not for you to give me your usual speech, and that doesn't mean they are "copying" wow, They are take WoW Elements ( that made that game good, aka UI mostly) and giving it a FF feel to it. You can call it a WoW with an FF skin on it or you can call it FF with some WoW elements, the results are the same to me.

Being difference can have consequences if you take the gamble. Look at 1.0 at Launch for instance..
