these aren't the things that make a mmo a mmo. those are mini games and extra's that if you played ffxi you know almost no one did. chocobo races? that zone was empty. the npc fights in coliseum? empty, pictures were done for enm's when they added or no one would do. setting up your mog house for anything more then space i feel a waist, mine were stacked with furniture of the most space that is all.

what i'm trying to say is it's not the shell of the game, the main frame and that is what is wow'ish or ffxi'ish or whatever other mmo'ish. the meaty part you do everyday in the game. how you play in a game, how people do things and why, i'm sure that is what most people are talking about.

We all know WoW is extremely popular. I haven't played it in years, but would like to know what you think makes it so popular.

Top 5 reasons so many people play WoW <can I have it> ?

    1. It plays on every computer ever. Having lower system requirements is a HUGE factor into it being so successful.
    2. Great advertising.
    3. "Casual player" friendly. You don't have to spend all your free time devoted to this game just to make the slightest progression.
    4. It's actually a good game. Hate all you want, the game itself is still good.
    5. Unlike here, the developers actually inform players about stuff going on in the game.

    In no particular order...

    1.) UI and Control scheme
2.) Content for solo players and groups at all levels.
3.) There are level-specific instances to complete starting at level 10
4.) Single classes can perform multiple roles, so you can decide to tank one day, then heal the next.
5.) Faction-Based PvP system which is constantly led to developers hot-fixing many classes and abilities to keep all classes balanced.

Also, Blizzard is really good about communicating with its players. I remember that there was a ton of information every week after cataclysm came out. Blog posts, explanations of hot-fixes, lore that nobody cared about. It was nice that they took the time to do that sort of thing instead of getting updates by nobody only when a patch is upcoming. Yoshi's pretty good at communicating with us, but he not yet on par with what blizzard goes through.

AAR is not just going to be an MMO, it is also an RPG that suppose to have strong storyline and plots.

In that sense, I think what SE is going for is to making ff14 feel as close to a final fantasy on consoles with mmo aspects.

Ya... going away from the "Norm" was such a great idea the first time around.

I don't think anyone is endorsing software mouse.

The main problem with trying to emulate the "norm", is that SE have shown no signs of trying to evolve the "norm". Usually a game released in 2012 will try to evolve or make improvements on a game released in 2004, but SE seem insistent that everything about WoW was perfect. Which is sort of an admission of incompetence on SE's part. Or at the very least, a lack of self esteem.

We are constantly seeing games try to push the barriers nowadays, and SE just doesn't do that. It's like they have blinders on which prevent them from seeing things that even FFXI did right, let alone every other MMO that wasn't WoW. There are so many games coming out of Korea (what else is new, amirite?) but every single one of them shows us what's possible. Mounted combat, aerial combat, sandbox features, open world features, the list goes on. And SE just wants to stand idly by and release some quests with some voiceovers. It's really just a pitiful show of effort.

There's a lot of stiff competition out there (sure these games wont be in beta until 2012 and may never see western shores) but they show us what's possible today, while SE just show us what was possible in 2004.

Even the Elder Scrolls Online is pushing the status quo set by WoW in 2004. Basically every game does something to improve the formula. Except SE. And who's going to even look at the game, let alone play it, if they just repeat a tired, unambitious formula?

From the very first announcements Elder Scrolls didn't seem as anything else than WoW 2.0. It's just recently that they started to say totally opposite things - I guess they've got scared when no one showed interest aside of the die-hard ES fans who thought the game would be another god's gift to humanity like every game in the series ;p

Well, exactly. When they first mentioned Elder Scrolls as nothing more than a quest-spam progression game with nothing new, everyone flew into a frenzy asking "what's the point?". Nobody really wanted that.

SE obvious didn't get the memo though...
