    Reputation Grinds

    Dev Response Might Be Nice:

I want to know if we will be having reputation grinds in FFXIV ARR. I know with gc ranks this sounds the same but it is quite different. In other games you have content you can do once a day (per 24hr period) where you can do missions or quests and get reputation leveled up. This allows you to spend money (gil) (gold) (whatever) and use that to buy goods or items you can use. In some cases I have seen it used to by special mounts. Reputation seemed to me a good way to earn as you go along. Something a few people have said they like when discussing the token scenario.

This content in no way would over power what you get from dungeons nor be the same gear. For example I don't see you getting a mount in a dungeon but who knows. I would like this to be something you can do daily. No way do I see this anything more then giving you a chance at some items that may not be readily available in a dungeon (heroic) setting.

One other example was from a game where I was able to get a rights to buy a fishing pole with really good stats for having max fame. It gives some of us middle of the row goals that don't require us to be dungeon grinding but still have something fun to do each day.

Would this be something possible in ARR? Is this already being considered?

Reputation/Faction used to be really kool way back in the day before MMOs went super easy-mode. You didn't run repetitive actions ever day just to build up and otherwise pointless faction just so you could use one half decent item. Your actions, all of your actions, used to have a literal impact on the world around you. Whole towns would become violent in your presence, shop keepers would offer discounts to allies, and of course special quest would appear depending on your allegiance.

If Square wants to go all in and do a full on real faction system involving all thirteen city-states, I'm all for it. But none of this half asses your faction can only go up and the only result is a special vendor is open crap.

You wanted a reputation system? It's like you read our minds! While we can't go into specifics yet, there will be a reputation system for free companies that will earn you various benefits as you raise it and allow you to receive a type of reward. As details become solid, we'll let you know!

Are there negative rewards as well?

The reason I ask is because my shell operates on a different set of rules than most others and there is also a possibility of an unjust negative reputation by rivals.

    Hi Rukkirrii,

Thanks for the update! Interesting idea.

If you could pass along the concern Jadi brought up (above), I hope Yoshida-san and the Team have safety measures in place for not allowing unfair Negative Feedback to be given to players / Free Companies. 2 quick examples:

    * I remember playing an Online Racing Game on Xbox 360: In one race, there was a 3 car crash (and I was behind the pack), not even close (I was last place). The wreck happened ahead of me, and I drove around the 3 cars as they were recovering. After the race, 2 of the players gave *everyone* a Negative Feedback / Rating Down, and I wasn't even involved with the car crash.

    * Look at something like Yelp! - You've read news reports, or heard about rival Restaurant Owners (or their friends) using Yelp to leave Negative Feedback and Reviews at rival Restaurants, or Rating Up their own Restaurants.

Just some things to be wary of.

    Thanks!

I don't think the reputation is something that is manipulated by users, but rather something like Fame levels in FFXI. i.e. Doing quests in each of the home nations typically raised your fame/reputation with that city, lowering npc costs and opening up new quests which rewarded you with the Teleport scrolls, etc.

More current MMOs have a fame system where once you reach a certain level, you're able to purchase different items. Also in WoW, there were some factions that were directly opposing to each other (the Kurenai and Maghar (sp?) or the Centaur tribes in Kalimdor come to mind) where if you raise your reputation too far with one, the other one hates you and will attack you on sight.

SE might try to take the more modern approach and say, you raise your fame with a faction in Gridania (the Woodwailers from above example could be used) for clearing one of the leveling dungeons repeatedly. Raising your reputation with them allows you to purchase goods from a quartermaster.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

If you answer yes..I'm switching worlds and coming to your guild Jadi. I swear I will.

Guild Wars 2 has a system like this, you gain Influence for your guild for doing various things - events, quests, using certain consumable items, being online at certain times, etc. And those Influence points are then used in ways to benefit your Guild either in the PvE or PvP stages of the game. I like the concept in it, just curious to see how the XIV team will incorporate it as well.

    I could see that.

Like 2 rival factions where you do certain deeds that could raise a large amount of reputation for 1, while insulting and losing reputation with the other, making it possible (albeit very slow and difficult) to max out reputation in both.

Which, having somehow maxed out both, would offer even further superior advantages.

    I could see that.

I think I know what you're getting at.

Say The Woodwailers become kind of like a faction within Gridania, and you can help their efforts by running errands for them to start you off, work your way up to deal with more serious issues the Woodwailers have, and once you get to max rep you can get something like a unique mount, special chocobo barding or even a unique set of gear (say the WW have a heavy armor set, a light armor set, and a caster set, which would work nicely with the in-the-works vanity slots).

The real challenge would be in updating rewards and progression within them, as the most common issue with factions/rep is that they become outdated once new content comes out. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I know some who would.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
