    Very noticeable gaps in higher-rank gear.

    Much of the equipment in FFXIV follows a pattern where every 10 ranks there's a better version made from more advanced materials, for example, the R24 Canvas Doublet Vest is replaced by the R34 Velveteen Doublet Vest, and the recipes are very similar apart from higher-grade materials. It seems like many of these patterns, with the exception of the Coatee outfit, stop in the 30s. However, there are higher base materials available.

    As a concrete example, let's go back to the doublet vest. The highest one available is the R34 Velveteen version. It's made from velveteen and buffalo leather. But these are not the highest-rank cloths and leathers. We have linen and wool. We have toad and boar leathers. We even have mythril buckles. So why isn't there an R44 doublet vest made from some of these materials?

    This phenomenon is not limited to doublet vests, where is a pair of R41 Electrum Spectacles? What about an R46 Linen or Woolen Robe or Hat? How about even an R36 Velveteen Doublet (not vest)? Or the half-robes, which don't even have a velveteen version? Some of this gear seems to have models for it: there are NPCs wearing what appear to be Seafoam-Blue Linen Robes (Ul'dah Adv. Guild) and Dark Violet Woolen Half-robes (CON Guild). Why can't we make it and use it? With the new direction equipment is going, will we ever see it? If so, when?

    tl;dr: We're clearly missing some gear recipes for the R40s...

    It's likely that we will see these things in the future, but like many things they were just left out in the interest of getting the game out on time. If you go to FFXIVPRO's item search feature, it will bring up things like Woolen Hats, Linen Doublets, Darksteel Harness, Gold Sabatons, Wyrmskin Thighboots... these things are in the .DAT files, but not yet implemented in the game. It's possible we will see them in future updates, though probably not until after the Devs have attended to more serious matters.

    I would rather see the linen doublet be turned on! and the velveteen one too. Sucks having to resort to Dodore Wing hunting for the next rank doublet. ; ;

    (!) I did not know you could find these things on FFXIVpro. Thanks for the tip, I'll go check them out.

    I definitely agree. There should at least be an R36 doublet like there's an R36 robe. It's not fair to BSM/GLD/ARMs.

    Well just BSM and ARM really. GLD and ALC have Velveteen Gown R38 they can use.

    I've thought a bit about this, and one conclusion I came to was the mismatch between gathering dyes vs. items ranks.

    Currently velveteen/boar leather dyes only appear from grade 5 harvest / quarry points, which would imply that linen dyers moss would have to be gathered from grade six harvest points. On release, there were no grade 6, hence no linen dyes, hence no linen recipes.

    In December SE hacked in linen dyer's moss via drops from mitelings, but the only linen recipes that were added were "fan service" recipes that seem designed to titillate and regain some interest from players. However, the remaining linen recipes were not added (linen robe, half-robe, acton, etc).

    I'd suppose it just came down to a question of priorities, and a lot of things were in flux with regard to the development team at that time. It's still rather disappointing ...

    I tried the search, but can not find anything you mention. I especially curious for Darksteel Harness. Can you link me?

    There are a lot of armor types you can see NPC's wearing which have yet to be added to the game, I think this is just a matter of patience, dev team have more pressing matter at the moment.

    http://www.ffxivpro.com/browse/2.2/body

    If you scroll down you will see missing icons for Darksteel Cuirass and Felt Tabard. Keep browsing through the pages and there are other items with no icons or real stats, just names. FFXIVPRO gets their stuff from the .DATS, so the names for these items are in the game files, just not finished (yet?).

    Ah...I didn't know that you couldn't get linen dyer's moss from harvesting. This makes sense though: the colors for dyed wool are in the game, but presumably you can't make the dye because the moss is unavailable.
