That argument isn't entirely accurate. People will always attempt to eke out the maximum amount of damage while safely completing content. It's why RDMs were used as healers in FFXI's Colibri burns. Right now, many events "require" two WHMs for the lay party to finish (I am aware that well tuned parties can get that down to 1 in pretty much any given event, but many lay parties cannot). As long as RDM is "adequate" as a second healer, it would always be prefered over a second WHM, assuming it also did more damage than a WHM.

Assisting the healer provided I a) have the opening in my damage rotation without impacting much on personal performance and b) have the resources to spare is very different from doing the healer's job. It may be the lack of healer jobs in the FF franchise, but multiple healers for group content is not an entirely new concept. By comparison, WoW 10-man runs have usually have 3 healers, 25-mans having usually 6 or so. And they're using real healers, not making the Retribution Paladins and Enhance Shaman responsible for healing duties on top of their role as DPS.
