Yes Ivy Bridge is cool (I'm running AMD Phenom II and Intel i7 right now on 3 machines), but I am waiting for the release of the following components in May 2013
    Intel Haswell i9 with
    memory: 16GB (4x4GB) Samsung* DDR3-1600 or better
storage: solid state HD 6Gbs or better
video card: GeForce GTX 780 with built in Surround Sound and 3D

Unless it sounds super cool like Blast Processing did, I don't care.

I think the new AMD chip will run ARR sufficiently since its requirements should be lower overall. If someone is planning on upgrading an older machine and on a budget, it may be worthwhile to look into it.

I used to use AMD back in the day, but I've used Intel for a better part of 10 years now. They just seem like a much better product. They're usually more expensive, but within the last 5-6 years their prices have been much more competitive. There's always the saying "you get what you pay for" as well.

I'm looking at getting an SSD drive around the time of Black Friday, and I hear nothing but good things about Intel's. They're usually a little more pricier than the Crucials and some of the other brands, but I hear they're top quality. Last thing I want to do is have to reinstall my OS three months later because my SSD took a dump.

Already have several SSDs. Most of the SSDs use exactly the same hardware(Sandforce controller and Samsung flash chips) so there's only a few features you have to look out for: Synchronous or Toggle NAND, Trim and SATA3 interface. But benchmark on the web usually tell enough. Taking the cheapest SSD with those features is usually good enough for every normal PC since it's already waaaaay faster than magnetic HDDs.

I'm more concerned with them dying after a few months like I hear happens to most of the non-Intel brands.

Anyway, I won't derail the graphics thread anymore.

@Dzian: I used to have an Nvidia 8800GTX back in the day when they were the thing to have. It ran SO HOT on me. I think all video cards nowadays run somewhat hot. I think my Radeon 6970 runs somewhere around 70-75C with FF14 running. I imagine after ARR comes out though it shouldn't stress out my video card quite as much.

I've never been much of a fan of radeon cards and my current card is a simple gtx460 and my cpu is an amd phenom x6.

probably not the best example of a the way my graphics and lighting look but heres a screenshot.

Thats using a gtx460 and phenom x6 black cpu. I can run The AO which you can probably see in the screenshot and have everything set to maximum settings. windows experience thingy is 7.7 cpu 7.7 ram 7.8 graphics 7.8 gaming graphics and all of that is killed by my harddrives scoring 6.0

Never had an issue with nvidia and personally they always seem to run alot cooler than radeons do

The newest generation GPUs are all pretty cool. They are focusing on reducing the power usage now it seems. You can get a highend GPU that consumes less than 100W in games now.

It's more like the processing power increased way faster than what's games are demanding nowadays. If you compare the most demanding games (GPU wise) of 2012/Crysis 1 (2007) with the most powerful GPU today and 5 years ago, you will see that GPU processing power moved on way faster.

So it's easier to have a good graphic card with a low TDP.

We also had a leap in resolution between 2002 and 2007, with 1920x1080 becoming rapidly a new standard. But between 2007 and today, 1920x1080 is still widely used and enthusiasts with 2560x1600 (or more) are really a minority so the needed processing power didn't increased much.
