I can assume you also mean a change in battle tempo, a few changes here and there to the mechanics, etc. But honestly, I'm just not sure I'd be able to accept playing another FFXI again.

All you are wanting is this game to get better. No matter which way you go, you're going to have to wait. In this case, you'd have to wait about another year for them to re-release FFXI. Whatever FFXIV has right now is either being changed or overhauled completely. Why in the world would you scrap any of it? Almost the whole game is being redesigned for us anyways. :P
Graphics don't matter to me. They can matter to others tho. That would still be in the list for a remake tho.

I'm not suggesting changing the battle tempo either. I'm suggesting making most of the game's core mechanics the same, only tweaking things like abilities to work in the long run, perhaps a smoother level curve (instead of a sudden jump in exp requirement after level 50), or level sync from release.

FFXIV will still always be different from FFXI no matter what they do with it. That other 20 percent or so of those who haven't played FFXI are still an influential chunk.

Yup, it might very well be too early to ask for this, but it doesn't hurt to suggest the idea.
