If SE were to make a FreeBSD... oh im sorry, "mac" client, that might be pretty cool. However i do not see this happening without first making a native Linux client, and you should look at the threads about that if you think a "mac" gets some backlash. OSX is a ripoff of FreeBSD and partly GNU/Linux, as such, WINE will also work (not sure if you consider that a "workaround")

I see a lot of people who have done absolutely zero research and clinging to the widespread rumor that a mac with "similar" specifications runs better than a PC. I have news for you on two fronts 1. a mac is a PC and has been ever since they dropped the FIFO processor model. 2. no they do not "run better faster stronger prettier." there is no magic part of a mac that makes it better, and as far as video editing on a mac, that went out the window when they went to the intel processors. Please stop regurgitating outdated and patently false claims about macs.

Just because dell doesnt make a computer that is as good as a mac does not mean there arent any computers as good as, or significantly better by powers of magnitude than, macs.

First off what makes a Macintosh relatively faster is its hardware os integration; secondly OSX is simply faster that is not an opinion that is a fact; thirdly most of the people I know who program or do video editing use a Mac(some even boot Linux off of it). The point is their is no point for you to attack a simple request based solely on your preconceived prejudices against Apple.

What does this mean? Can you give me a definition?

Because every single OS is integrated with hardware. That is what an operating system is.

    secondly OSX is simply faster that is not an opinion that is a fact;
I also don't think you know what this means. Fast in what way? Boot time? Standard operational use? High stress use? Data manipulation?

I use a Mac because a. my company provided me with one free of charge, and b. it slightly beats out Windows for me personally because I develop in a Unix environment. If I had my choice, I would be getting a PC and putting Linux on it.

The reason why developing some things for Apple is difficult is because they have f**ked up policies on what you can develop, and because they have a very bad track record of releasing system libraries (like sound) that aren't backwards compatible and break games. It puts a lot of stress on some games with an older release date, but that must still be supported (like MMOs and MOBA games).

And Direct X and so known for its backwards compatibility or being an open platform...

I'm sorry, perhaps i should have introduced myself. Over in the WINE AppDB, i am known as Michael D. I am the first maintainer for FFXI and first supermaintainer/maintainer for FFXIV. I have also been supporting GNU/Linux and Mac OSX applications for several years. These preconceived prejudices are from experience.
You have not lived until you have been in a room with 1 doctor of CS, 2 doctoral students, four graduate students and some undergraduate research students all gathered around an iMac and ready to ask you to disassemble it to get the rewritable CD out of the drive because dragging rewritable media to the trashcan makes so much sense on a method of ejection.

Most people that i know, do not understand that a Mac is not different than a PC, other than the "magic" chip that OSX will poll to see if it is a mac. Video editing is not faster on a mac, it is just elitist and traditional all at once.

Please get some experience before spewing forth opinions that are being claimed as fact.

I think this topic was about asking for a native mac client? hey OP, is WINE ok, or were you looking for more? i think we got lost. Also, official and unsupported clients for Linux/BSD/Mac would be awesome. Id ask for BeOS, but Be doesnt even support it anymore.

They will only release it on decent platforms, Mac is for graphics design not gaming.

It's not, but that's not what I meant. You can have DX9, DX10 and DX11 on your OS at the same time. As far as I know, that's not a thing with MacOSX's system libraries. When you update, the old versions of your system libraries are gone.

They've gotten better about some things over the last year and a half, but sound is still somewhat of a problem.

Yes. You are exactly correct. There are a lot of old rumors out there and the real difference is the software and we all know Microsoft makes horrible software. Having worked for Microsoft I know that teams at Microsoft aren't even able to see the code for things that other teams are working on so it's a wonder Windows even runs at all.. combine that with 3rd partys creating hardware drivers and you have the glorious mess that is PC Gaming complete with all the crashes and bugs we are so fond of.

Aside from that problem though you don't need Bootcamp or Parallels or any of that garbage. As many people have posted already. The game ALREADY runs on Mac and Linux via Wine and Wine *IS* a native Win32 API on Unix, Wine runs Windows the same way Windows runs Windows, the only difference is the API is incomplete.

And yes it implements Direct X as well.

SE could improve it by taking the source code and recompiling the game with Winelib to create an official (yet unsupported) Mac/Linux client. This would probably take minimal effort as well seeing as it already works in Wine. They only need to change the build environment not the game code itself. Wine already implements enough of the API to allow XIV to run.
