In Dark Souls, every death is a lesson, and it's firm but fair. You learn how to be a better player and ultimately you lose nothing but time you spent going through a level or fighting a boss and possibly this game's equivalent of money (souls). You keep your weapons. You keep your levels. Your character isn't the crutch, you are.

XP loss is garbage that makes you afraid to do anything because of the chance that something will go south and cost you a level up and takes a long, LONG time to obtain. It doesn't teach you anything other than to not help other people or be an elitist jerk. Your character becomes something that prevents you from playing the game to its fullest.

XP loss sucks.
I understand what you mean and I agree in principle. But to me, these days I'd rather have tougher draconian elements in a game because it's amusing to me. Sometimes those annoying things in games created memories, even if heart wrenching. The days where you couldn't come on a forum and ask for things to be changed, I guess I just miss the days when these kinds of things were not arguable, you would just wonder what bastard came up with the idea and you'd chug along. Later on you'd remember those terrible things but you'd appreciate the experience anyway.
