    I don't like gear breaking. I don't understand the complete obsession with breaking gear after death.

    Dying is enough of a punishment for dying. I don't mind weakness, but anything else is silly.

    I agree just with the first part of your post. A death penality is needed, but as said Gear Breaking is just annoying. Not really a penality.

    The penalty should be that you can no longer do the content for x amount of time, or until weakness runs out. Gear breaking doesn't teach you anything.

    I think the 60k to repair all yoru level 50 gear is painful enough for most people.

    Personally, I prefer the XP debt from EQ. No levels lost, but XP is cut in half til you pay the debt.

    lol did you not play ffxi? people did anyway. and i'm not just referring to trying over and over again until they finally win. i'm referring specifically to zombying tactics, knowing fully well the xp penalties involved.

    That's mostly post-ToAU though, where EXP was fast to get. So yeah no one was caring about losing 12-20K by zombying something. It was less than one hour of EXP... Also the balance was completely different in XI. One single player zombying could help a whole linkshell to kill a NM or recover after a wipe. Benefit was really high compared to the effort involved regaining the EXP back.

    When one guy loses 20K while zombying for a whole LS, it's in the end only 1K/player loss, when you average it. What's better? This or losing your NM (which mean losing several hours of efforts to either collect pop items, either camp the nm.)

    It all about effort/benefit balance. If EXP loss on XI was exponential after repeated deaths, less players would zombie (or LS would rotate/use mules).

    (Note that I am NOT in favour of EXP loss in XIV, but I'm just explaining you how XI is a special case.)
