the current knockback just has us sliding across the ground. Will ARR knockback be more... real?

I doubt it, they already said they are nerfing the animations we currently have.
Than again they might surprise us.
What kind of knockback are you expecting? Do you want your legs to lift up so it looks like you're flying backwards? I think it's fine.
It is very viable to have a knock back where you still slide across the ground, except your character is in a pose in which it appears it is trying to stop, and there is dust trail or whatever on the ground where your feet are sliding.
Knocbacks also don't do positioning correctly, and you can be knocked back multiple times in a row by enemies all standing in the same spot for over 20 yalms (check out mosshorn). You aren't reported as 'moved' until 4-5 seconds after the knockback. Theres nothing fine about how knockback is right now.

It would be epic if it would literally knock you off your feet and then depending on your job you would have to stand back up. Like a mage job or a heavy armor job would have to roll over and jump back up, and a monk or archer could do a kick jump to fling themselves back up from their back. Hell the animation is in the game already with the crazy MNK weapon skills, it would just be nice to see it thrown everywhere lol
FFXIV's boss/mob knockbacks are pointlessly stupid and aimed at forcing people to tank in little corners so they don't actually move. My hopes would be that they are removed in the realization that it doesn't add ANYTHING to a fight other than being buddies with the wall.
If they keep knockbacks and wanted add in tasteful/useful effects there should be 4 variations of it that would also mean more to what job you are on;
1) Full knock back - 100% of the push back distance, fall on your face.
2) guarded knockback - 75 of normal push back, block sliding backwards with crossed in front of your face.
3) parried knock back - 50% of normal push back, both hands used; hold onto the opposite ends of the weapon and guard from the attack and they could stop the distance by placing their weapon in the ground as they go back some. lol, very unlikely but it sounds anime-ish.
4) shielded knock back - 25% of normal knocked back distance, very slight push back with feet well grounded and shield covering head while crouching or something of that sort.
