Alpha was supposed to have started by now, so yeah..March 2013 if we're lucky, later on in the summer 2013 most likely. As of now the only solid information we have is:

"Sometime after the worlds go down on november 11th the first FFXIV windows alpha test will begin." Which if you remember is the Japanese only one as well.

This sounds more realistic if not pessimistic. But i would prefer to be a pessimist cause there will be fewer surprises in life and the surprises you get are good ones! lol, joking aside i would prefer they take longs and released a more flushed out and polished game than rushing to meet a deadline they set for themselves almost a year ago. we all saw what happens when you push to meet a deadline, you get an overhaul of the game and the director "steps down".

Open Beta starts December~ish. it was originally late October then mid November, don't be shocked if its pushed back yet again.

hmm, they have said they wont give any date yet though. But since the game is supposed to be out before the end of 2012, i hope it will be before then :P (get an early beta and get rid of early bugs is important)

also, i want to have a christmas event, lets start ARR with lots of presents

heh? where do you got that info that this game being launched in december? did i get you right? ;XD

how should this look like?

october -> alpha test

november -> closed beta test

xxxx - > open beta test??

december -> release?

its obviously not possible in that time.

it'll be more like that:

october/(november) -> alpha
november/december/(january) -> closed beta
january -> open beta
feburary/march -> release

and the roadmap shows also that it will most likely be 2013 and not 2012:

the comprehensive roadmap says that the client will be out in january 2013.. and its the old roadmap of 2011 .. post-january means it can be after january.. i think it'll be more february or march. i say march the earliest

I really think 2.0 will just be ready when it's ready. They can't predict when that will be because it depends entirely on how the Alpha and Beta go, how many bugs are found, how serious those bugs are, what other things are deemed broken when accessed by the masses, etc. 1.0 didn't respect the Beta process, they released it before many issues were remedied, and that's how we got into this huge mess from the start. Yoshi has said that he does not want to repeat that mistake. If he stands by that, there is no way to predict when 2.0 will be ready.

As for when the Beta will be ready, I think it will probably be about a month after servers go down if Alpha is primarily for incremental stress tests (starting with just the Japanese and then going out from there with bigger and bigger groups). It still depends on how the Alpha goes though. If the stress tests don't go well, Beta may be pushed back further.
