Depends. By default they're weak to magic, however some of them like boss types (Princess Pudding, Cumin Custard etc) are weak to only certain elements and absorb their respective element.
They also have an "ability" when they grow spikes which is when you'll be able to hurt them a bit more with physical damage. Non-elemental damage also does boosted damage to them like using one of the new Sword WSs you get at 96 will bypass their physical defense.

flan have looked consistently similar in the FF series.
I wouldn't say they look any more like XI's puddings than any of the recent FF's flans (bar XIII)
also, a lot of you here are confusing the meanings of the words "similar" and "identical"
even if two things look very similar, they don't look identical unless they are... get this... actually identical, like identical twins. IE: amaljaa and mamoolja look very similar, with differences in skin color, skeletal structure and bulk. you could say they're cousins. maybe one evolved from the other. but do they look exactly the same? no, they do not. no matter how you try to slice it- whether minor or not, there are aesthetical differences.

That's what I meant, actually. Similarities. The Amalj'aa looks similar to the Mamool'ja, along with their names. To me, I think FFXI had a ton of monsters, but I'm not sure compared to past games. FFXI was my first main Final Fantasy game, but my first spin-off of sorts was Tactics Advance.also, a lot of you here are confusing the meanings of the words "similar" and "identical"

I really want to see Giant worms (Land worms) as some sort of normal mob, having them as a NM was cool and all but you rarely got to see it.
I hate when new cool monsters are regulated to dungeons and special events only.

I would like want see to this, my most favorite FFXI designs

^ I just looked up all of those monsters on FFXIpedia or whatever. It was really interesting to read about those as I've actually never heard about them. To be honest, my highest job on FFXI was Lv38 or so. I just didn't have the time to play the game while doing schoolwork in high school and college.
I just hope that there will be some kinds of these monsters when ARR releases. Either that or new ones, but I like the variety that FFXI had. Which Final Fantasy game had the most monsters in-game (such as the families, eg. rarabs, orcs, birds, etc.)?
