    Now then lets compare the graphics via screenshots and video footage

    well i just wanted to start a thread in contrast to the other "Cartoony graphics" thread. we need some enthusiasm




    Comparing the graphics


    in ARR

    FFXIV now (yes these arent the best screenshots)

    more details in the environment
    the details within the environment of Thanalon now (missing many vegetation)

    then (with many cactuars,grass, bushes and tracks etc. in it)



    what happened? for me the world of ARR is seeming much more lively in the end. i really enjoy that fact.. with that in background having many "sightseeing stuff" in their hands.

    you just got blind over the years, like me.
    well i enjoy the much more lively details in ARR much more than the boring environment which we have right now in the current version.

    that was a very much negative aspect of FFXIV .. but you seem to almost forgot about it. do you forgot that thanalan looks almost the same in front of the gates of ul'dah through the whole zone? it looks just all the same... im not exploring thanalan, because there is nothing to explore.

    and thats why i'm happy about playing finally ARR.. it has zones with loadscreens, yeah but we have things to recognize.

    and regions we havent seen yet (just the gridania starting area)






    we just have seen... at least nothing but starter areas ;XD and coming to conclusions how the graphics will be? seriously.

    well seems we'll have to wait what we can expect in Beta or Release, when actually playing it. but i definatley looking forward to it.
    we just have seen mostly the starter area in gridania.

    The ARR screenshot reminded me somewhat of South Gustaberg. Had to youtube the soundtrack after seeing that XD oh nostalgia~

    That Thanalan trainstation gets me so giddy - cant wait to visit so many unique looking places.

    The Lightening



    Lightening in the current version. The character doesnt seem to be effected that much by the sun light.



    the luminous engine offers real dynamic shadowing

    we have no dynamic shadows like this right now:
    characters "blinded by the sun" [shows an earlier alpha version]

    characters half in the shadows [shows an earlier alpha version]






    lighening in agnis philosophy, luminous studio graphics tech demo:


    in darkness the character seems more three-dimensional, here you can see that the characters in ARR wont have less details. :

    when the character is directly in the sunlight he maybe seems just too bright. For your meaning "cartoonish"


    its the lightning and shadow effect which disturbs you.
    but Yoshida also said, that the lightening and shadowing of the last trailer they've released was not final and showed an earlier version. (the first two screenshots)

    Maybe compare them on standard settings at least. Also ARR is not using Luminous engine.

    Hopefully they improve ARR before release, as they did 1.0 (it still needs a lot of work). Theyve probably got 6 months to do so at this rate anyway.

    ARR is using a modified version of the Luminous engine, specially geared towards MMO coding and such. The core seems to be the same as the Luminous engine, but the other assetts have been modified to suit the needs.

    SE claim it's a "sister engine", which doesn't really quantify how much of its "core" is similar to the luminous engine. However, similar staff members worked on each, and maybe that's why people think that they're closely related. But they're not. A cursory glance at Agnis Philosophy and ARR is enough to prove that. Theyre obviously completely different. I mean it's obvious that since the system requirements for Agnis Philosophy will be so much higher than ARR that the similarities between the two cannot really be that great. Dynamic lighting is nothing exlusive to Luminous, so ARR's engine probably has more in common with its contemporary MMO games with similar system reqs than with Agnis Philosophy and other games made with the real luminous.
