Is the "Point Allotment" system necessary at all?

    Hello folks.

I realized while getting my DRG and MNK to 50 that I and almost everybody else using those jobs never had a reason to put points into anything but the 2 auto-attack mods which made me wonder...

When the game launched and stats were vague at best the system was interesting, with being able to re-spec your elemental resistance and stats but now that we know that for most classes only the two main modifiers are what matters and are what most people spend their points on...

Do we really need this system? or would taking it out and re-balancing the stats distribution be better?

DRG goes STR/PIE, WAR goes STR/VIT, MNK uses STR/INT and so on.

BLM and WHM are an exception I suppose since they don't need to use their Auto-Attack so BLMs put points on INT/PIE(?) and WHMs MND/VIT. (I'm no mage, so don't take my word on the above stats but there's a standard most people conform to I'm sure.)

TL;DR: Why have points allotment at all if everybody caps the 2 mods that count and ignore the rest? would you be OK with the system being taken out and stats being rebalanced?

Even if we don't "need" the system, it's great to have options to put stats where we want to

Yes but you have a finite number of times you can re-spec and you'll certainly end up putting the points on your 2 main mods, making the system pretty much a useless gimmick.

    I second what Antanias said♪

You've listed some pretty cookie-cutter setups there, but the nice thing about the stat allotment is you can put the points where you'd like.
If you want a parry-based WAR for instance you could pack a bunch of points on dex.

The system allows for a lot of flexibility which is cool, but just because people cookie-cutter it, doesn't make it a bad system♪

It was intended as a way of letting people specialize and build their character for the role they liked to play most.

Like to be a tank? Put your points into STR and VIT.
Is the bow your favorite weapon? Put your points into DEX and PIE.
Prefer to spend most of your time playing as a BLM? Put your points into INT and PIE.

Kind of like training yourself to be good at the role you like most.

But people wanted to be able to switch jobs right away and not feel gimped. If they were a WHM main and were suddenly asked to be a DD, they would be seen as gimped if all their points were in the wrong stat -- and no one likes that.

So now we have the per-job allocation that instantly re-allocates our points depending on the weapon we pick up.

So, yes, it's kind of pointless now, IMHO.

I don't see how a DEX build WAR can ever best a STR/VIT WAR in tanking or DDings since those 2 mods boost the damage and defense/HP, but fine lets say you decided to DEX build and parry tank.

What about something like DRG? can they boost their damage with stats other than STR/PIE? surely VIT MND or PIE won't be of any help and whats left is DEX which increases accuracy but I doubt it outweighs the auto-attack boost PIE provides.

What it boils down to is that to me the allotment system revolves around calculations not choices where there is a correct answer and a wrong one(or more).

A MNK capping STR/INT calculated that those stats are what boosts his DPS while one that boosted MND/PIE got nothing at all from that decision which makes it "wrong".

These guys explain it better than I can hope to.

So... do we really need this system in its current state or does it need to be rebalanced fixed or removed?

    Pointless for most? Yes.

But who is it harming to keep in place? New people would be the only answer and they get a free respec per job.

So why take it out and ruin the fun for the few who like to pick something a little less common?

I'd honestly rather see the use of more than just two stats per job. If each job got three stats that mattered, and had a good return (DEX could actually be useful for PLD's block rate, VIT for an actual HP boost, defense mattering, etc.), I can see a reason to have the stat allocation. It's better than what it was prior to 1.20, but it's still needing a lot of work.

I think we just need a way to be able to easily re-allocate points at will and it will be fine to keep it in.

That way we can swap points around depending on the situation, like a DRG stacking VIT in a small group to semi-tank, a CNJ stacking INT for soloing, etc.
