I would say ACN like Ar-Ca-Nist
The same as PGL for Pu-Gi-List

We already had this with BLM and BSM. Blacksmith starts with black as well but is abbreviated differently.
Really it's not that much of an ordeal.

ACN
ACA
Its the same kind of issue Goldsmith and Gladiator once had. It doesnt mean one class will cease to exist.
The best solution is to completely remove classes from the game, and stick to traditional jobs only. Classes are pointless anyway.

As to avoid confusions with ARC (People were having that with GLA, Gladiator, and GLD, Goldsmith, which later forced them to rename Goldsmith to GSM.) I strongly doubt we'll see ARN or ART, I'd recommend ACN myself. That or ACT.
This? Again? Seriously?
First, Arcanist is a class, which later turns into Summoner. Your suggestion would mean ditch Arcanist and go straight to Summoner which by the way, is not ready yet and won't be until after ARR is released.
Second, classes are far from pointless and are still used in varying situations to this day. Thaumaturge (A "class".) is still used for situations like Ifrit battles. Gladiator (A "class" again.) is often used in Moogle battles too if a WAR isn't present. Classes are designed to offer a more wider array of flexibility as opposed to their job counterparts, and if you're a soloer, a class can actually be much more viable than a job when you're looking at it from a survival perspective.
For example, I enjoy Archer. When farming keystones for Moogle runs I can quickly find myself outnumbered and eating dirt when I play the job Bard over Archer. As an Archer I have not only access to Second Wind, I have access to Sentinel, Bloodbath, and Invigorate just to make a few. A Monk could be good for farming stuff but a Pugilist might be better since not only can you throw on Cure, you've got Protect, Stoneskin, and should the need arise if duoing, Raise. Having a secondary healing method could mean the difference between death and a narrow victory.
Besides, if classes were as pointless as you claim then why would SE even bother making class-specific armor? Jobs are meant for party play and general end-game content. Classes are meant for solo-related content or small parties where you might need an extra heal or two, or specialization in more than a single area. Sadly however the only class that I would almost agree on being pointless is Conjurer, there are few skills that they can make use of from different classes which White Mage couldn't already offer.
Hopefully if anything with the re-balancing they'll be doing come ARR classes will play an even more vital role in which you might actually want a class over a job for a particular situation.

And why would you doubt we'll see ARN especially since it's no where near any other class abbreviation?
