Gameplay is more important in the long run because without good gameplay, you loose subscribers, graphics aren't going to keep them playing.
The point is, the graphics have taken a hit, in order for game play to succeed. Example, displaying more characters on screen, doing more with the environment, etc..

Besides, FFXIV in ARR will still be the leading MMO in graphics on the market, even after its hit. So, you kind of are getting both given the situation.
Gameplay didnt keep all these players going through launch till now :P. I'm pretty sure the graphics and being fans of SE did that lol.

But I agree good gameplay is extremely important to the longevity of the game in an entire timeline scene. However since FF isnt going for a stylized look its really important they dont mess up their fantasy realism.
