You are trying to imagine auto-attack in the system currently in play, its not going to be the same when they start patching in the battle system overhaul. Hopefully all turn out for the best, I am interested to see how it'll all come together in the end though.

I don't see any reason why a mage needs to have auto attack in the first place. They don't need to be tied to a TP system.
Hopefully people can start thinking outside of the box a little bit. Otherwise they won't be able to see all of the possibilities for a new combat system.

Actually, they do. They need some way of damaging mobs if they are out of mp, or are playing tactically to conserve mp in a dungeon or whatever. Before they added mp regen, a significant amount of my damage to mobs came from my attack and TP skill(s).
All I'm saying is that I'm disappointed because they are taking away significant control of battle. I hardly think that hitting the light attack key 3-4 times to build TP was that burdensome. But who knows, they might surprise us and come up with a nice system.
I'm extremely skeptical of that, however. History has proven that the more you listen to the whining from armchair developers on forums, the higher the chance that you screw your game over irrevocably.

if your in a dungeon and ur low on mp take a minute to let a mage recover a few hundred ticks and ur good to go. plus we have a 10 minute ability giving us 500+ or more mp, plus we have tools to lower mp consumption, and recover used tp. So that is kinda moot anyways mages truly don't need to gain tp is they don't want to.Actually, they do. I only worry about AA messing up mages and DD when trying to stack single use buffs for weapon skills. This is my biggest worry right now is SE balancing that I don't want to go for blood right and Profundity II and AA hits and I didn't have a chance to use my skills to buff a magic attack. Whether done in macro or manually there are still delays and AA might go off during those times and mess up those strategic elements. Also I hope haste gear and spells get added now as well to help speed ourselves up and what not.
These are my concerns right at the moment. I was fine with the current battle system and quite enjoyed it as a mage and now while leveling DD. Even on DD jobs PUG being my highest I don't find my self using 11111111111111111111111111111111112111111111111111111111111111311111111111111111111111111114 at all. I am anxiously optimistic about the new battle system, however, I do have my worries and am going to reserve those until its released.
Edited for spelling
you see, the curent system was outside the box and had possiblities... so people asked for something they already know, so they wont have to learn/think

Well the majority won I guess, I personally did not cre either way, I liked the current system but I wouldn't mind auto attack only for ONE reason, so I can type and still attack.
Aside from that I still remain neutral to this subject, part of me is happy for AA, other part is sad to see the system now go.

This.
Congrats everyone, you got your stamina-free damage boost that does the attacking for you so don't have to think so much. Maybe next we can remove all those annoying choices from Synthesis so we can just press <Craft> and not have to worry about all that extra stuff.

Yup, and give us unlimited Anima to reduce the timesink of walking. Oh, and just cut out the mini-game for gathering as well... it's just a useless timesink and I have to press buttons to do it. Hell, just give me one button I can press to activate the "auto level" mode so I can watch TV while I play.

Did you miss the part where he hinted at the battle involvement staying the same?
Also you people are implying that we, the <30k players that are playing right now, are the "majority" that the current development team is aiming to please, lol.
If you don't want to play a game that has to appease the masses (which are not playing, and thought the game was horrible) to survive right now, then I'm afraid you're playing the wrong game.
