They already screwed themselves over by consciously choosing to un-innovate. And Yoshi says in interviews "it's a secret" everytime someone asks what's new/interesting about FFXIV.Exactly as the above posters have said, they need to come out of the gates kicking and screaming with awesome.
They dont have room to get an ok run up. If they dont blow up the doors and bleed the fields they will likely have a similar reaction to what happened the first time FFXIV was released.
They are under a lot of pressure - and I'm sure everyone here feels for them; however, we also know that if they dont get it right - there is just going to be more devastation, possibly this time completely irreversible. (For 14 at least).
That is my fear. I hope SE is giving the FFXIV team all the resources they need. Halfassing it will waste their money and they might as well milk 1.0 as it slowly dwindles to a select few, then concentrate servers again - till it dies.

They uploaded a fixed version of that trailer. Looks much better.
They still used old resources - but yeah the lag being gone has helped. I think there would have been a negative reaction to it though even if they had it fixed the first time. There are a couple scenes that if you freeze frame - they look like 2003.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw080tAzrcQ&feature=plcp

They should have only shown the grid area as well XD.. that area is their best showcase so far. -Everyone- loves that area now.
It'd be tough for any areas to be as boring as the current areas are. Graphically they are pretty but they are also some of the most boring copypasta terrains I've ever seen in a MMO.
I personally think that it still looks like an upgrade. We haven't seen any extensive running around the other areas.
It's hard for it to be "like XIV 1.0" when they already have a "soild" base to work on at this present time, so by logic it would already be in a much better position at launch unless in the rebuild process they throw out everything XIV 1.0 did and rebuild from scratch and end up not making any deadlines, much like they threw away what they did with XI and well we know that history.
Though in reality people expect ARR to compete with MMOs the second it launches and that's near impossible to do because there could be so much content they add for launch but other MMOs, by time it launches, will already be x updates in and they can't keep up with it or the game will never be released lol, so at some point in time they'll have to bite a bullet and hope for the best because there's always going to be something at launch of an MMO that won't go well, we've seen it with all from either server stability, queue errors or long queue lines, so they have to eventually say "Well it's time" no matter the competition or the state of said competitors MMO content wise.
XIV will be looked at much more intently than anything but as said there's only so much they can do that they'll never meet expectations and just have to do what they can. We won't have a repeat of 1.0 unless they really drop the ball.
Another update from Yoshida about the TGS trailer!
Hello. Producer/Director Yoshida here.
We’ve re-uploaded the TGS trailer to the web. 4Gamer, even though it was late at night, fixed the link for us. Many thanks. (Apologies that it may be an inconvenience, but I’ll avoid directly linking to it.)
Tomorrow we’ll be giving the links to each media outlet in turn; however, the official site will be updated after another round of QA checks early next week.
For the in-game battle portions, it seems that the bit-rate was lagging due to using a full HD uncompressed AVI taken directly from the PC. At the TGS venue the video was played right from the digital tape, so there were no problems; however, for the web version that was compressed automatically during upload, there was severe stuttering due to a reliance on computer specs and a high amount of lag. I deeply apologize to all of you who were looking forward to this video. (At the TGS venue there were no problems and it can be seen on the big screen.)
Also, for all of our current players concerned about differences between hair, facial expressions, neck movement, and other aspects, we are still in the midst of increasing the quality of everything, so please check out the game videos starting with the alpha version and later.

There is nothing wrong with the game taking longer to come out. Them rushing the original out way too fast and not taking time to fix things that testers told them to fix was one of the reasons this game flopped so hard. That, and the aforementioned boring copypasta world.
So will the people that cried out about the quality of the game calm down now? ( Wishful thinking) I knew that the Alpha Version is no where near the final version. :P.we are still in the midst of increase the quality of everything
I think most people have calmed down knowing that the characters are from older alpha (characters were where most had an issue).
I'm hoping the same can be said about La Noseca and Thanalan.
People are however worried SE releasing this kind of stuff is bad press (we arent the only ones who have eyes, I know there is a thread on ign (not posted by ign - started by users) saying the characters looked silly). - Also we have other previous issues that influence these matters like taking out sexy animations.
