I wouldn't mind if consuming bate went out the window as well but they should keep the different baits you can equip for different fish.

Indeed. Consumable bait can die. We do need more lures that are specific to different fish so we dont catch everything in the water with one tho.

With the exception of pill bugs, all vendor bought consumable bait had no favored fish associated with it, so it wouldn't be a big deal if it disappeared. Crafted bait and crafted and vendor bought lures are much more useful though and should probably stay in their current form. If anything, they need to be adjusted some for some of them to have more uses. There's currently about 6 fish or so that don't have a favored bait and a few pieces of bait that only target 1 or 2 fish.Since they haven't mentioned bait at all, there wouldn't be any inconsistency in removing it.
However, it should be more like ffxi, with bait that is consumed, along with lures that are not (unless the line breaks)
For arrows, it was already at a point where we carried a grossly unrealistic number of arrows, so it's reasonable to change that to an endless supply. For fishing, bait isn't used in the same quantity or at the same rate and doesn't have the same economic impact. In fact, I don't think I've ever bought bait in what time I've fished- the game doles out a lot of lower end bait for free.
I think between making some favored bait adjustments and reworking fish distribution to make it easier to target fish with specific baits, fishing will feel a little more comparable to mining and botany where you feel you're actually getting more of the item you're actually aiming for.
