God no jumping, never jumping, it doesn't do anything because those "invisible walls" are not four feet tall, they're collision detectors, meaning you can't jump over them, adding jump would just make everyone look retarded hopping around, it's not much but it's one of the reason i prefer FFXIV community instead of the other mmo's, it just kills your fun when you're immersed in the system and you walk into a town and everyone is hopping around like it's wonderland or something.

That's why we need auto-jump at those stupid invisible walls. I shouldn't have to walk all the way around the cave mouths at Bloodshore because I accidentally fell down a two yalm ledge, and yet it won't let me go back up.

However, given the height differences between races and the likelihood that these ridges were never designed to be "traversed" it could be difficult to come up with a consistently believable animation for all occasions.

For that reason, player-initiated jumping would probably work better than context-based.
I was thinking of something akin to a limited parkour (free-running) system. Basically if one's character came to a small ledge or terrain obstruction that would obviously be able to be traversed in a simple manner (IE: simply stepping up, brief climb, etc) the character would just do so. I'm not talking about hopping fences and climbing buildings like in Assassin's creed or anything but just a simple animation that is automatically activated at certain areas where the terrain should be traversable under normal (Read: real) circumstances.

Another option would be something similar to FFXIII's context activated "jumps or climbs." But I sure as hell don't want to see my character jump 15 feet straight into the the air, do a front flip and land gracefully. So if it's all taken in stride, I'd be in favor of something like that. But I don't necessarily want or feel like I need a "jump".

No jump button please! Why? I think i let this video explain it for me.

A terrain triggered jump like in FFXIII would be totally ok thou or climbing up like in Monster hunter.
Jumping isnt the problem in itself, its the people who abuse it, and boy they WILL abuse it if its implemented, as they do in ANY MMO that has a jump button.

Jumping should ONLY be allowed for things like dungeons where something will be prompted to allow it. Otherwise the FF dark shadow hovering over us type feel will not be so dark when everyone is jumping around like retards. Leave the bunny hopping to games like WoW.

I hope they add jump and actually do something with it.

Jump is a great way to add interesting content in the game : adding platform parts in dungeons (whoever is in charge of planning the feature has to play DDO), allowing secret places or artifact to be hidden in interesting ways (think of those collectibles in EQ 2/Rift you can find on top of trees), and even add a dimension to strategic battles (jumping on low gravity could help avoiding some earth based attack). Using it only to solve the terrain design problems would be a waste.

If there are elements in the game that would give jumping a purpose; (dungeon puzzles? avoiding damage/bad terrain) then I'm all for it. If its just jumping for the sake of jumping - forget it. Spend more time developing other things that need attention.

I'm wary of the idea of a jump feature. My first concern is the massive difference in races. My second is what it would actually be used for. My third is the potential for bugs. My fourth is how big a problem those bugs could cause.

I'm more partial towards the idea of a auto-jump, like in FFXIII, for multiple reasons. Overall, it would be easier to implement. Less changes would need to be made to the game itself. Less testing for exploits, and really, fewer chances of getting bugs, since it would only be used in situations the developers plan for, not everywhere they dont.

That said, im not really against the idea of a free jump. I would enjoy a free jump if it was used in ways to make the game more interesting, such as through more complex fights, but really I dont feel it's necessary. Plenty of games, console and mmo alike, dont have a jump feature. It's just not necessary for some games.
