Being able to get over small ridges in certain outdoor areas is really the only major annoyance I'm aware of. It doesn't even have to be "jumping" so much as the character pulling themselves over the ridge, or something like that. However, given the height differences between races and the likelihood that these ridges were never designed to be "traversed" it could be difficult to come up with a consistently believable animation for all occasions.

For that reason, player-initiated jumping would probably work better than context-based.

I was thinking of something akin to a limited parkour (free-running) system. Basically if one's character came to a small ledge or terrain obstruction that would obviously be able to be traversed in a simple manner (IE: simply stepping up, brief climb, etc) the character would just do so. I'm not talking about hopping fences and climbing buildings like in Assassin's creed or anything but just a simple animation that is automatically activated at certain areas where the terrain should be traversable under normal (Read: real) circumstances.

Another option would be something similar to FFXIII's context activated "jumps or climbs." But I sure as hell don't want to see my character jump 15 feet straight into the the air, do a front flip and land gracefully. So if it's all taken in stride, I'd be in favor of something like that. But I don't necessarily want or feel like I need a "jump".
