I played FFXI for four years, and I am actually in favor of a jump feature in FFXIV.
As someone else previously said in this thread, just because we FFXI vets got used to not having a jump feature, doesn't mean we didn't miss it. And to use the argument that 'if it was good enough for FFXI, it's good enough for FFXIV' is silly. There's no reason to think that everyone who came to FFXIV was looking for FFXI with updated graphics. Many were looking for a modern Final Fantasy MMO that had gotten with the times.
While some believe that implementing a jump feature may break immersion, I feel that not having it leads to frustration for many players. And part of FFXIV's new direction is alleviating player frustration.
I play with my husband, and when we're doing leves around Limsa Lominsa, I can hear him grumbling across the room whenever he has to go 10 feet to the right because the game won't allow him to jump six inches. The thing that gets me is the area in Limsa near the chocobo stables. There's a piece of stone near the steps that sticks up about 2 inches off the floor, and I get hung on it every time. The feeling of being stuck to the ground, navigating an obstacle course style path, is more of an immersion breaker and more of a cause of frustration than letting me jump.
I do despise the quick twitchy instant World of Warcraft style jumping. However, FFXIV's actions and emotions are masterfully animated. I have every confidence that jumping in this game would feel just as realistic.
I've seen it work in other games where it was animated in a way that there is the feeling of weight and the execution of the jump is not instant. As such, people don't abuse it.
I don't agree, however, that the way to go about it is designated location jumping. You'd still be making someone go out of their way to jump up/down from that bit of terrain.
Not a cooldown, either.
There are one of two ways to go about it. One would be to slow down the animation so that it's very realistic. Its very nature would inhibit spam-jumping.
The other would be to use a stamina bar. You get so many jump attempts before you tire yourself out and have to wait until the bar fills back up.
