"The thing that stands out to me in Final Fantasy is the complete want of exploration, not just on the ground, but above the ground also. It's so linear and the sense of discovery of certain areas in a FF game are dwarfed by the potential of discovery if jump was added."

I ask you this simple question. How?

How in the hell is Jump going to solve the problem? You know I've seen two idea's on this thread that are WAY better and more plausible to implement a sense of, "Exploration" than a stupid jump feature......They're simple features such as climbing and swimming......So jump solves all those, huh? You going to jump up a 60 degree angle on the side of a mountain? You going to imitate Jesus Christ and "Jump" on water?

I'm sorry to say, Gifthorse, but it's not I who wears the tin foil hat for mentioning that we could all fly around to reach hilltops, or an abandoned pirate ship in the middle of the sea...........It's you. To constantly say that "Jump" will make exploring the world of Eor'zea a much more enjoyable experience is rather stupid. There is simply one way jump can work. And that's along the same lines as FFXIII and Zelda as a simple act of a collision detected so it automatically jumps over the obstacle.

If you truly want some exploration, then you'd agree that jump doesn't accomplish a damn thing. If you want some adventure, try something else along the lines of climbing a mountain or swimming through the ocean. Right now you're just being a child. Do me a favor, Gifthorse(And any others who think they can), and list at least five ways you can explore MORE terrain with a jump feature.....And they better be good!
If you notice my use of the word 'teh' in my post, you'll see that it was obviously a joke. In actual fact, I would LOVE flying. I was just making fun of those who have a fear of novel things, such as flying mounts, simply because such things were not included in FFXI.

The issue with flying mounts which I can see is to do with limitations of the game engine and definitely not the idea. Crossing zone boundaries such as the one between thanalan and the Black Shroud, or the loading in of several areas, might be tricky if you could bypass several of the strategically placed zoning tunnels which SE put in there.

Anyways, I think all forms of motion are needed. Climbing, swimming, jumping. I am not saying jumping takes precedence over the others, but you can't climb or swim over a gap. And you can't fail an automatic jump, so it removes the possibility of failure from the equation when exploring. Again, it puts you on rails and a predetermined path; things which destroy the sense of exploration.
